The one I'm looking at costs almost half as much.

Understood. If the one you are looking at makes noises while focusing it will soon need a focusing motor according to Nikon Tech Support. That cost, IF parts are available, would render that copy of no value. Best of luck.

Thank you for your advice. I ended up buying the lens. It makes no sound while focusing. Everything seems to work like supposed to so far. It's heavy with D700 but feels good, very solid lens.
Even if the focusing motor will go bad I will use manual focus, no problem. On the lens that wide MF is easy and quick, at F8 or F11 almost everything is in focus. I did a few quick test shots. Center sharpness is really good, edges are a little softer, I expected that.

Thank you everyone for your input.

Mine works well

Imagine my surprise when using it on my D750 after having it on crop cameras for so many years.

Good to hear!
Hope you continue to have good luck with it.
I have a 14-24 and the 24-70.
Don’t use the 14-24 as much as I expected.
A 17-35 would probably be used more.

Yes, that's the reason I decided to replace my primes 20, 24,28 and 35mm with one pro quality gold ring Nikon zoom. It gives me convenience and flexibility and it'll be used much more.

I found pretty impressive comments on this lens.
