Why not just call it a 1/3 camera or a 1/3-sensor camera since most of their sensors are about 1/3" in size? After all, we have 4/3 cameras (which doesn’t make any sense to me). Trying to get away from this cellphone or smartphone nonsense. Making a phone call is the least that those devices do.
Right now we are steadily approaching the summit. We are at a small plateau in the development of cameras on those thingamabobs. In time, we shall soon see these whatchamacallits rival those name brand beasties. Be patient. There will be a cell phone...Er!...camera in everyone's pocket.
Oh and by the way, the owner's manual for these phones will be 800 plus pages long with 300 pages devoted to the camera feature.
Eagerly awaiting the next CHG_CANONism.....
It does not make sense to me. The phone sensors are about 1/2.5 in size.
Much simpler to just call them by model name.

If you really wanted to get away from it you wouldn't have created another thread on the topic that has been beat to death recently.
Call it whatever you want, and others will do the same. In the course of a typical day how many people ask you what you call your cell phone or GARA?
If you walk into a store to buy one do you ask for a cell phone, or do you ask for mashed potatoes?
If you just want to continue this endless topic, that's OK too.
Here are links to over a dozen UHH threads on cell phones that might make interesting reading.

We have "pocket cameras" so how about "portable" or "personal" or "always available" camera for phones. My "AA" camera is Always Available with me versus my Nikons & Sonys.

The 4/3 makes perfect sense once you understand that is is the ratio of the length to the height of the sensor.
I call it a phone camera.

This will never happen because of the Phone, communications folks, but isn't it time to drop the " Smart Phone " label as telephone communication is just one of a vast array of features these devices perform. How about something like " PD " personal device, which would be a lot more inclusive. A camera is just one of the features of a PD. Just thinking outside the box again...
The entire device, at the low end a personal choice, none of my business. At the high end bordering on a symptom of psychopathology, identifier of individuals to actively avoid in any social setting.
Interesting statistic that may put this silly topic to rest. The camera is far from the most used feature on smartphones.

Calling them something different than cell phones will only confuse people.

I agree that making phone calls is probably one of the the lesser used features, but coming up with a new name just for the camera feature will just cause unnecessary confusion. Whether we like it or not, its a cell phone, and the camera is a cell phone camera.

The standard for naming digital camera sensors has NOTHING TO DO with their actual physical size. It is a 1950s standard, based on what would have been the *usable area of sensitivity* on the end of a vidicon TV camera tube! 4/3 is 1.33 inches in that parlance... so a 4/3 video tube was 1.33" in diameter. That is the *video camera tube equivalent.* 4/3 and Micro 4/3 DIGITAL sensors are actually 18x13.5mm, or 21.6mm on the diagonal. That was the usable area of sensitivity on the tube, too.
A One Inch sensor has a diagonal dimension of 16mm! Yeah, I know, it's obtuse, obsolete, confusing, and deceitful... But it stuck! And the marketing folks love it, because it makes things seem bigger than they are, OR befuddles the consumer away from the truth.
Personally, I think *smartphone* is a good generic name for an iPhone or Android phone. I agree that it is a supercomputer in a pocket, rather than just a phone, but because of its origin as "An iPod, a phone, and an Internet communicator," and the trade press' incessant need to simplify terms, the name stuck.

Smartphone camera is simple enough. It's universally understood. Sensor size isn't a popular concern outside of our photo nerd community.
