We mainly have garter snakes around here but that doesn't look like anything I've ever seen.

Not a garter snake. They have stripes that run the length of their body. The looks like a bull snake to me.

As far as being a snapshot how else could you get this shot? So many critical people these days and many need to filter themselves. Never saw the OP ask for a critique of the image. And being in the moment does not allow for setting up a tripod and asking the scene to pause while you get set up is not going to happen so you take the shot as best you can. How would you have approached the scene?????
