If that happened as you state then it is deplorable and I hope you returned it for a refund, but, 'Beware' doesn't do the rest of us any good without you letting us know things like where you bought it. Was it advertised as new? Was there a warranty, etc?

How do you know that if they did a full function test it would not rack up a shutter count over 4000. That may be the way they do it. They do not reset the count.
