d5200 multiple exposure

In shooting menu "multiple exposure off" is darkened. When trying to turn "It on it is not available in current camera setting"
appears. The manual shows it is available in P,S,A,M modes, but it does not actuate. What's wrong?
Any ideas?

You may need to turn bracketing off. Another google solution is to reset the shooting menu, though I'm not sure what that entails.

Is it available in RAW? Are you shooting RAW files?

Don't have that camera but do you actually have it set to one of those modes, then go to menu to switch on? Does this link help?

Do you have Live View turned off?

See if this helps:

First step must be followed by pressing the arrow key.

Easier to talk both pictures and combine them in post processing. There you'll have additional options using layers - with layer styles (blend if comes to mind) or just the myriad of options with layers/opacity/blend modes.

Doing intentional double exposures in camera can be unpredictable.

I encourage you to use multiple exposure on your Nikon body. I use it all the time on my D 500 and D 810 and am very pleased with the incamera MEs. If you like to spend time doing it during post, then do it then. One example: full moon shots and then place the moon where I want it with focus changed to second image. Takes two seconds.

I use PSE 15, but only use layers to create multiple exposures. That way you can be very precise with placement. May take longer than a dedicated tool, but works. (My camera -- Pentax K-50 -- will do ME.)
