The other day I was taking some photo's when my low battery light came on a the Camera stopped. I went to get my backup fully charged battery to put in the camera and it turned on, I could zoom in and out but the LCD screen was black and the viewfinder is dark light the lens cap was on.
I bought a new battery and tried that but still nothing.
When I push the button to turn it on it makes the beep noise the screen comes on then automatically turns black same with the viewfinder. But the camera will zoom in and out.

I took it to Mikes Camera to see if they could repair it but the guy didn't seem interested in even looking at it as it was from 2013.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this problem?

Thanks Lori

Same thing happened with mine, but much sooner because I used it so much I sent to Canon, but they would not fix; they are too inexpensive to carry parts and not designed to be repaired. Unfortunately, you will need to shop for a replacement.

I am not sure what 'dark light the lens cap was on' means, but if just the screen is black, it could be the display is turned off. If the screen is in any the open position, the view finder is blacked out.

Well darn it. It's been a great little camera. I have taken hundreds of thousands of photos with it over the the past 6 years. She will be missed. I just purchased the Canon SX70 to replace my SX50. Hope it will be just as good.
Thank you 😊

I have tried turning the screen on and off and the screen is still dark, the viewfinder is also dark when a try this as well. Wonder if the sensor is bad.

Well, neat to know you got that many photos out of it. I'm at about 2000 on my XS50. In wonderment if the menu even comes up for you? I did see in checking their website that they have a refurb XS50 for sale so amazing they won't take them in for repair.

Yes it's been a wonderful little camera that has been to a lot of scenic places here in Colorado, it also came with us to Hawaii and Walt Disney world. I just purchased the Canon SX70 which I hope will be just as good. Will sure miss my old SX50. 😔

Sounds like you got a lot of life out of your SX50. Mine has been fantastic and still going strong, but I have only used it for probably 20,000+/- shots. It is mostly just used as my travel camera now when I want to travel light. Please let us know what you think about your new SX70 once you've had sufficient time to check it out.

Yes, my sx50 'died' early last year, and the camera repair shop I took it to wasn't interested. It was the best camera I have used for simplicity and quality of shots, I even captured Jupiter and 4 of its moons!. I have had two Bridge cameras since(sony and Panasonic) and they been big disappointments, so I hope your new sx70 is even better than the sx50.

If you got hundreds of thousands of pics from it over that time Lorima, I'd say you probably got 10X value for dollars spent!! Even 100K is absolutely fabulous for a bridge camera. Enjoy the new SX70, I hope you get as many miles out of it! Have fun!!

I realize this is after the fact since you’ve already purchased the SX70, but doesn’t Canon still offer a “loyalty program” discount for these sorts of scenarios?

You may want to consider selling your SX50 for parts on EBay and get something for it. Canon doesn't feel it is worth fixing, because they have to charge labor. And parts are unavailable. You probably can still get a used SX50 on EBay that is operable. You have a SX70, which is better than the SX50. The SX70 doesn't have a hot shoe. Mainly, because Canon assumed most users would not buy a separate flash unit for it anyway. I only use my built in Flash on my Nikon Bridge camera, when needed.. It has no hot shoe. I do have a flash unit for my DSLR.

If you still want to try and get the SX50 fixed, you might try KEH. Because they deal in used cameras and lenses, they often have parts that can be used for repairs. They just fixed a "grey market" Tamron zoom that no one else would touch. Or you might find a quality used camera.
