B-17

Working outside I heard the unmistakable sound of the four engines of a B-17 flying in the distance.
It turned out to be a tour by the "Aluminum Overcast" being held for three days at the Rutland
Airport in Vermont. For those who had an affinity for WWII aircraft they could take a flight in the
bomber as a once in a life time event. True it would cost $475.00 but for those who just had to
experience it the flight was well worth the expense. Calculating the cost of running the four Prat
and Whitney 7 cylinder 2000 horse power engines was another reason for the cost. The look on
the faces of those who had taken the trip said it all.

I took the opportunity to fly on the Nine-0-Nine from the Collings foundation about 15 years ago. It was $400.00 at that time. They told me that it cost about $3000.00 per hour back then. I'm sure it's more now. Nice images.

Very cool. My Father-In-Law was flying around in a B-17D near the end of WWII. Amazing how many bullets they could take. The Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, CA next to the Chino Airport is restoring a B-17. Not sure if they ever expect it to be flight worthy again or just something to look at. It was rather incomplete when I toured the plane on the ground. At the time a member of my Adult Ed photo class was a board member of the museum and got us a behind the scenes tour.

Nice set, thanks for sharing. Love those B-17's. Did a photo session with her myself last May when she was in Nashville. They keep her in good shape. Got to photograph another B-17 yesterday called Ye Olde Pub which is also out on tour.

The other 2 planes that I would like to "ride" in would be the B-36 and B-29. Rutland, VT is not all that far from where I live. I might have to take a flight ride in the B-17 before I kick off. Thanks for posting. I did not know this - about flight rides in a B-17. Sure sounds like fun !!!

Nice photos, The aircraft was powered by four Pratt & Whitney R-1690 Hornet radial engines, each producing 750 hp !

nimbushopper, what engines power a B-36 (one of my all-time favorite planes) ?? And the 4 jet engines as well. I guess if I weren't so lazy, I could Google this and find out. But I am confident you know the answer.
