Because TC’s are NOT compatible with your 55-300 lens.

Why not consider going to a longer super zoom such as the Tamron 18-400. It would give you a bit more reach.

EDIT: On your D7100, the 18-400 would give you the 35mm equivalent of 27-600mm due to the 1.5 multiplier on your crop sensor camera.

I am considering the purchase of a Nikon 1.7 teleconverter for use with my AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED VR lens and Nikon D7100 camera body. I called B&H Camera and the person I spoke to told me that my lens would not be compatible with ANY teleconverters. I pointed out that the Nikon Compatibility Chart for Teleconverters listed their 1.7 teleconverter with the note AF(1), meaning that autofocus is only possible with lenses having a max. aperature of f/4 or greater. Since my lens has a maximum aperature of only 4.5, I'm guessing I could use the teleconverter with manual focus but this person said I couldn't use it, PERIOD. I should mention that I already have a Sigma 2x teleconverter which I bought for a Sigma 150-600mm lens but I couldn't seem to attach it to my 55-300mm Nikon lens or camera body. Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome!

A maximum aperture of 4.5 is NOT greater than an aperture of 4.0. The aperture is, very simply put, how wide the opening letting light in is. The larger the absolute f stop number (aka aperture), the SMALLER the opening. The smaller the absolute number, the LARGER the opening.

I would suggest that you purchase Bryan Peterson’s book “Understanding Exposure”. It is well-written and an easy read.

@MadMikeOne: If he thinks he's smarter than Nikon, what makes you think he would buy Bryan Peterson's book?

OK, you’ve got me there. It’s obvious that I just didn’t think it through! Can’t say I didn’t try, though.

You can try some TC's maybe Kenko would work, but I am pretty sure you won't be happy with the results. If your goal is to get a nice sharp image at 500mm, this combination is not going to give you that. You'll be happier with a true 500mm lens, even if it is a zoom.

If I could extend the reach of my 150-300mm zoom to 510mm, I wouldn't consider a waste of my money. My 150-600mm Sigma is a little too heavy for me to use these days without a tripod. My 86-year-old body ain't what it used to be!

There are some bridge cameras that go 1200 very sharp with a Zeiss lens and very sharp and does not weigh much. I have a friend that shoots with one and tack sharp. He had the same problem as you aging and weight. Look up the Sony RX10 mark IV. Spend your money so you can take pictures for many more years and the extender is not the way to go.

My chart may be old, but my Nikon chart lists no teleconverter possible for your lens, in fact, it does not even list your lens. Which means, it is not possible to put a teleconverter on your lens because it will probably make contact the rear element of your lens when you try to mount it.

Nikon says the converter is okay, but a salesman says it isn't. You ya gonna believe? At the very worst, you can return it if it doesn't work. I use a Kenko 1.4TC, and it works fine. It cost a bit less than a 600mm lens.

Less than 1x increase in scope with narrower FOV.
Always seemed to me that a .7 increase in size during PP
would be virtually impossible to detect, by normal people.

Kenko 1.4 and 2X extenders will physically "fit" your lens -and you are welcome to manually focus .......but keep your expectations LOW and you may be happy.

or he could get lucky. I had an old 1.4X Kenko that apparently didn't report itself. My Canon Rebel didn't know it could't AF, so it focused just as if the Kenko device weren't there.
