Definitely Desktop. More powerful, faster and easier to fix. I do use a laptop when I'm away from home, but that's mostly for backup storage.
Hmmm, this contradicts your post Steve:
On PCMark Vantage, the ThinkPad W520 scored 9909 points, 30% higher than the average score of desktop replacements.

Gerry,
I've got an old quad core ThinkPad Workstation, a W520 with 16gig of RAM.
It's a
laptop that has serious speed and grunt.
Runs Photoshop CS6 and Capture One effortlessly...
ThinkPads come in various levels; the "Workstation" range
are Lenovos (under licence from IBM) "ThinkPad" heavy duty units.
The display has good colour rendition. The machine comes with a program
to fine tune the light levels and colour of the display.
Display: 15.6 in (40 cm) 1920 × 1080 (16∶9) LED-backlit TN LCD (95% Adobe RGB coverage)
Once you get used to the "touch pad" unit, you use to move the cursor
around... it's sensational, it almost reads your mind... the cursor
jumps miraculously to the exact spot you want it... instantaneously... it leaves
the "mouse" for dead.
I've had an IBM desktop console and a couple of other
generic desktop consoles... however I'm satisfied with
this laptop Gerry.
It's great to be able to easily move it from room to room
or slip it into a backpack and take it with when I'm mobile
too.
At the moment I'm sitting up in bed with the unit on
my lap as I type this. :-)
The successor to the "W" series of ThinkPads is the "P" series,
they are still classified as workstations though.
I believe they are designed
for professional 8 hour a day use.
I guess that those that dis laptops, have not used a decent laptop.
