It would be nice if this forum had the ability to create polls, as I've seen on other sites. Anyway, here's my question. How many of you use a laptop as your main computer? I began with desktops, and although I also have laptops, it's hard for me to take a laptop seriously. It's the same with cameras. Unless it's a big, heavy DSLR, I can't take it seriously. I know I'm wrong on both counts, but since I began with the big stuff, that's what I tend to use.

So - desktop or laptop?

2 Win 10 & 1 Win 7 desktops at home, and an HP Laptop.

So which one is your MAIN computer?
(That was the question, not what do you have.)

Sorry, that was an error on my part. The first period was meant to be a question mark.

Definitely Desktop. More powerful, faster and easier to fix. I do use a laptop when I'm away from home, but that's mostly for backup storage.

Hmmm, this contradicts your post Steve:
On PCMark Vantage, the ThinkPad W520 scored 9909 points, 30% higher than the average score of desktop replacements.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gerry,

I've got an old quad core ThinkPad Workstation, a W520 with 16gig of RAM.
It's a laptop that has serious speed and grunt.
Runs Photoshop CS6 and Capture One effortlessly...
ThinkPads come in various levels; the "Workstation" range
are Lenovos (under licence from IBM) "ThinkPad" heavy duty units.

The display has good colour rendition. The machine comes with a program
to fine tune the light levels and colour of the display.
Display: 15.6 in (40 cm) 1920 × 1080 (16∶9) LED-backlit TN LCD (95% Adobe RGB coverage)

Once you get used to the "touch pad" unit, you use to move the cursor
around... it's sensational, it almost reads your mind... the cursor
jumps miraculously to the exact spot you want it... instantaneously... it leaves
the "mouse" for dead.

I've had an IBM desktop console and a couple of other
generic desktop consoles... however I'm satisfied with
this laptop Gerry.

It's great to be able to easily move it from room to room
or slip it into a backpack and take it with when I'm mobile
too.

At the moment I'm sitting up in bed with the unit on
my lap as I type this. :-)

The successor to the "W" series of ThinkPads is the "P" series,
they are still classified as workstations though.
I believe they are designed
for professional 8 hour a day use.

I guess that those that dis laptops, have not used a decent laptop.

My 2 WIN 10 PC would be my main computers. The newest on is only used for photography, nothing else. The other on is used for email, going on the internet, all my MS Office apps, etc.

So I guess I have 2 main PC's, but used differently.

It's quite possible that the OP is very old school and is not up to date on newer technology. I agree, the hard to take seriously statement is silly and biased. There are laptop computers today that are capable of out performing even the best desktop machines.

I don't think it is all about updated technology, but I do agree old school is a factor. A lot of us old school people learned to type and are comfortable with a standard keyboard, not a flat keyboard like laptops have. Yes, I know you can add a standard keyboard to a laptop just as you can add a larger screen but at that point you are just trading a tower for a thin box that can overheat, get dropped, get stepped on, lost on the subway, get more easily stolen, etc.! That is why while I do have a laptop, my main computer is still a desktop.

I learned how to type on a standard typewriter in highschool. The typewriter, like every standard keyboard, mechanical or electronic, had a qwerty keyboard. Whether a typewriter or a computer input device, the keys are all in the same layout.
As for "tower" desktops, towers weren't desktops and, does anyone really make them anymore!? High power, high speed desktop machines these days are the size of a shoe box.
I stated earlier I have two laptop PC'S, and neither of them has ever overheated, ever. All the years I used a company issued laptop PC, I never lost one, had one stolen, stepped on it or took it on a Subway. I needed a portable PC for my job and the laptops I was issued did the job just as well as a non portable desktop machine, and the fact they were portable, even better.

Below is my first comment... clearly said WIN 10 computers were Desktops. Yes you are right, I did not say which was my MAIN computer in the first post, But I replied back to you answering you question saying DESKTOP's were the main ones I use.

Yea, I followed that after I was made aware of the other (second) post.

Okay.
(You could have mentioned that there was a second post also.)
