A laptop but, I prefer a desktop. I'm with you on DSLR's.

I'm guessing it is because of slowing down because of old age - darn!
Built my first computer in the mid seventies from a chip - Motorola 68 (maybe 680) - scavenged from a "black box" controller out of a Lincoln Continental. Was able to create a stick horse on the little TV screen monitor by using sets of keys. Was bitten by the home-brew bug! When Windows 95 came along, I was in heaven building bigger and better computers nearly every year.
Fast forward to a couple years ago when I purchased a little white MacBook laptop and was bitten by the smaller is better bug.
Now typing on this little 13" MacBook Pro with tremendous speed and tons more memory on a SSD with ample Ram to run just about anything, I wonder how I got along with all those boat anchors taking up many square feet of desk space - on top and underneath heating up the room.
Guess the best part is now I'm kicking back in my recliner sipping a cup of tea and looking out the window seeing the sun rise while typing this...
Well I'm in the minority here and trying to figure... (show quote)

(Probably a Motorola 6800, don't remember when the 68000 came out.)

It would be nice if this forum had the ability to create polls, as I've seen on other sites. Anyway, here's my question. How many of you use a laptop as your main computer? I began with desktops, and although I also have laptops, it's hard for me to take a laptop seriously. It's the same with cameras. Unless it's a big, heavy DSLR, I can't take it seriously. I know I'm wrong on both counts, but since I began with the big stuff, that's what I tend to use.

So - desktop or laptop?

What do you mean by, take a laptop seriously? It's a computer, same as a desktop. They do the exact same thing. I guess you prefer a dial phone to a push button phone or a vacuum tube radio to a transistor or integrated circuit radio. When you travel, do you look for airlines that still operate piston pounder propeller powered planes like the DC-3 or C-46 or DC-4 or Lockheed Constellation?
The company I worked at for 38 and a half years before I retired last year is an industry leader in information technology and there is a computer on just about every occupied desk. The employees who weren't required to have their computer with them 24/7 all had desktop machines, mainly because they cost less. I was issued a new laptop PC every five years and have not owned a desktop PC for a very long time. I own two laptop PC'S and two Android tablets. The device I use most often for casual net surfing and idol chitchat is one of my tablets. For serious work like banking and photo editing I prefer to use one of my laptops. On my desk at home I have a keyboard and 40 inch flat panel monitor I use with one of my laptop PC'S. I don't like desktop computers because they are not portable. So for me, Laptop over Desktop.
I'm retired and I have no problem with new technology. Just because I'm getting old doesn't mean I have to continue to use old or outdated stuff. Truth be told, I do prefer my DSLR'S to the smaller MILC'S.

Desktop. I had a laptop and hated it on all aspects.

I'm typing this on my HP ENVY i7 lowly 'ol' laptop.
Where it's resting on my lap. :-)
99% of my computing is done here.
The biggest use of my home assembled desktop computer is for paying bills.
So much easier to write into a checkbook register.
It also runs my HP laserjet printer and an Epson scanner.
They don't fit anywhere near my recliner. Sorry!
Laptops can be just about as powerful as a desktop but with a lot more convenience.

Desktops are typically faster and have more storage.
I use both. Desktop in the office, laptop in the family room and vacations by car.
It depends on what floats your boat.

You could post a link to a poll site. Keep in mind that if you post the link in the first message the bot will transfer your post to links where few will see it. So maybe start a little discussion before posting a link.

I use a big heavy laptop for my photo processing. But I bought a Z6 to get my camera weight down.

And, if and when this one poops out, it well be another desktop for me.
I have used laptops but just something about them that I do not like.

Laptop. We used laptops to run intensive development graphic software at work, so why not for my photos? It has worked well for the last 5 years. I do often think about getting a desktop, though. The fan runs a lot in the laptop, which indicates it is working overtime. As with smaller cameras having less ability to dissipate heat, so goes the same for laptops vs towers.

Desktop but use an iPad Pro 12.9 more frequently... desktop for sure when doing any heavy photo editing. I also have an older MS Surface Pro for traveling.

jerryc41, I use a laptop almost exclusively and I love it. I do, however, use a 47" smart TV as my monitor. The resolution and color accuracy of the TV far surpass that of my laptop screen.
