Now my extreme bias is going to show. If you want to take "snapshots" use a phone. If you want to take photographs, get a camera.

I hate to be the one to say it, but that is not bias - its ignorance. The current crop of camera phones may not be able to do everything you can do with a camera, but the things they do, they do very well - plus many other things.

Did I miss something? I'm fairly sure that my diatribe did not have the combination "DSLR" anywhere in it. And I do like cell phones; for talking.

I have an 8 right now, and it’s a big upgrade from the 5 you have. That said, I’m going to get the 11pro...mostly to replace an aging iPad mini4, but also because I use my phone quite a bit for mobile databases that involve taking 100’s of photos at a site to catalog signage conditions. Often times those images are taken in subpar lit construction areas. The 11pro should excel in those conditions. I also find it helpful to use SnapSeed to edit photos too on my phone, albeit it looks like the 11 pro has better editing capabilities over the 11.

Apple seems to be selling iPhones as ‘cameras’ that can do other things also.

I've had good luck with "unlocked" cell phones. Virtually all cell phones are made in china, so I just look at specs and get what I want. My current phone is Xiaomi MI8. I really like the camera, I thinks it's 12 mp, but has fantastic depth of field. I took a picture inside a lighthouse, the light room was about 3' X 3' and I had the light in focus as well as bay. Cost of a good chinese phone can run from $100 to $300, most have space for two sim cards so you can either have two cell carriers, or one cell plan plus extra storage.

An ‘Apple camera’ can be used like a regular P&S .... with WiFi. Several years after retiring an older iPhone - and switching from AT&T to Verizon - I got that old iPhone out, recharged it, took a few pictures, then transferred them up to the cloud with its still-functioning WiFi {no cell connection was available, of course}.

The photo editing options in iOS 13 will make a huge difference for you! I have been using 13 since the first beta on my XR and iPP 11. I was sold on 13 just with the photo app enhancements!

are you saying that a person with an iPhone 8 should experience the changes brought by iOS 13 before upgrading to an iPhone 11?

The cameras on the 11 are big improvements over the 8. But the new editing capabilities in iOS 13 allow for a lot of enhancements on the older phones, especially in poorer lighting conditions. iOS 13 does not bring the older camera up to the functionality of 11's, but for some it may be enough to not worry about upgrading this year.

The more serious you are about picture capabilities, however, will certainly make you want to move to the 11.

My wife tells me I will just have to make do with my XR this year and she is happy with her 8+. So I will just have to be happy with iOS 13. ; )

For casual photos, I don't do any editing.

Whatever editing I do, I use gimp on this computer, but I guess I should learn the basics of their tools also.
