I love shooting sunsets. The past few days have had great clouds, but I was busy shuttling kids around and couldn't go shoot. Yesterday I didn't have any commitments and the fog wasn't rolling in... but there were no clouds either. I personally think clouds are an important part of the sunset because they give some interest. Else, I'm just looking at a yellow color fade (that can be nice too).

Luckily, it takes me about 5 minutes to ride my old bike to the pier. My plan was to see if I could get lucky with low tide or find something interesting on the pier. Then pick up some tacos from Oscars for my daughter. Yes, I was using the, "I'll get dinner" excuse to try and watch the sunset.

The tide wasn't low enough for a good reflection. I walked around ankle deep in the surf for a while and decided to try a slow hand-held shot again. My 16-35/4 VR actually allows me to shoot pretty slow. So, I guessed a good composition, put my elbows on my knees and got the camera low. Then I shot 5 bursts trying to time some waves. I'm amazed that the pier is sharp in some of them.

I think I found an interesting image and it was fun to make. I did need to level in LR. 1/20th, f11, ISO 100, 35mm Nikon D750 hand held, but this was more about the adventure of trying to find a picture in limited time and get dinner.

That lens has a great VR. I didn't understand why you would want VR in a 16-35 lens, but I now like it.

It’s level enough for me (I had to get a ruler to find the it’s off just a tick), and I like the concept of the waves, the pier, and the setting sun.

The waves make the picture . . . IMHO. I would only suggest that a slightly slower shutter speed would have made them look more like waves rather than puffy pillows or clouds. But, still an excellent, unusual photo. Tom27.
