I had problems with my printer, until I relized that my VPN(virtual private network) was on. When I stopped the VPN, everything cleared up.

I classify HP in two eras BC and AC, before Carly and After Carly, BC I didn't think twice about HP. my go to for printers, calculators and computers.
AC I don't think twice about avoiding HP. I have an AC computer and printer, the computer is a lemon, nothing specific just unreasonably slow and slowly dying, HP didn't care and because it wasn't anything specific blamed to operator. printer wireless connection is intermittent at best.
Just got a new Dell, be here in a couple of weeks

I tend to agree. I’ve used many HP laser printers and calculators and they were excellent, and of course their test equipment was world class. Fast forward to recently, and the printers were terrible. Bloatware SW that was a nightmare, high ink consumption and ridiculous ink prices.
But a couple of years ago, I was shopping for an all in one, just to do business printing and scanning (I have a Canon 9000 Pro MKII for photo printing). I picked up an HP 8700 series for about $90 and bought the $2.99 per month ink. plan, and it has been excellent. I only use it occasionally, but it never clogs, and if I want to print dozens of brochures, the speed and color is excellent. The scanning is fast and good (although obviously not as good as my Epson v600), and the ink plan is super convenient. They start by sending you spare cartridges, which you keep, and anytime the printer gets low on ink, it communicates with HP, and a replacement cartridge shows up in a day or so. The net-net is that for $36 per year, you never have to worry about your printer or ink - it’s just always there and available. That program gives you 50 pages a month, so the cost is 6 cents per page, and if you go over that, they just charge your account an additional small amount per page. In short, I am very satisfied - always available printing at a very reasonable price, and never a trip to the office supply store. I have to admit I’m surprised.
My current go-to printer is a Xerox all-in-one color laser printer that I got on sale from Costco. According to Costco it was a $400 printer that was on sale for about $150.
I also have a Canon Pro 100 printer I use for photos but I'm not all that crazy about it. My next photo printer will probably be an Epson or Lexmark.

I needed a color printer for a small project and bought a cheap HP Envy 5012. This has been a nightmare to set up. I downloaded the software and installed it, it printed out the test sheet just fine, then the software told me I had to scan the printout. Ok, that done it wouldn't print color anymore. I checked on line and even HP didn't seem to have an answer.
Now I'm trying to get it to scan, but it requires more software, yet when I try to get what I need, it just offers the same software I downloaded the first time.
Maybe it would be happier if I was using a PC instead of a Mac. So far, I've spent 2 1/2 hours trying to get this thing set up. I'm ready to take it back. I have had a lot of printers, Epson, Canon etc. and never experienced anything like this. I haven't had an HP since 1995. Is this typical of all modern printers or just HP?

No, just typical of the short life products made by HP. Take it back and buy a Canon.
"Maybe it would be happier if I was using a PC instead of a Mac." I hear this so many times.

Wow, I never hear this. If anything, it's the other way around. Apple users are fanatics about anything Apple. Have you seen those lines at the Apple store when they come out with a new product? Even the national news will broadcast a segment when there is anything new from Apple.

What did I tell you? I'm watching a San Francisco TV station's morning news and they just did a segment about the new Iphone going on sale today and showing the long lines of people waiting for who knows how long for the store to open so they can buy the latest Iphone.

The SF station just did another segment on the Iphone and they said the first guy in line had been there since 7 am the day before. That's dedication.
