Would like feedback on cell phone options. I have Iphone 5c and am obviously in need of a serious upgrade.
As a novice photographer, with no desire to spend $1000+ if unnecessary, I value and appreciate honest comments. I am 76 years young and love the quick shots I get with my 5c, but it's time to move on. Help!

Simply stated, I have fun with photos, along with seeing humor in most situations. I snap away for personal reasons and enjoy sharing with family and friends. NO ASPIRATIONS to become professional and rarely, close to never, take a selfie. When I search for the diff. in the camera component of iPhones, the technical aspects go beyond my pay scale. Is it too much to desire a good, under $500-600, simple cell phone. To me, the descriptions oversell, using fancy words to avoid saying "no basic change." I will probably try to find an iPhone 8, unsure about used or new. Obviously, my 5c shows I don't need to keep up with the Jones. Would rather spend my money on the trip of a lifetime: just returned from 2 week African Safari and son insisted I take his Nikon 5200 (on auto.)...glad I did, but heavy camera.
pmorin...you are the best....and a local OC???

Yup, lived here most of my life. Orange High School class of 70. Been in HB for 30 years now. But I’ve put in my time in the Midwest, New England and Arizona.

I just (yesterday) printed a friends cel phone pictures of Africa on 8.5X11" and they were fine. He goes on a regular basis and uses his phone and I print them for him. Can't talk him into a camera.

This was taken with an iPhone 8. It is a passable camera, but not nearly as good as the new 11. Far better than the 5 though.

One issue with the DxO review from their own comments
"Please note that we did not test the super-wide-angle lens for this review"
So the MAIN plus of the Pixel 3 front facing camera was not even considered and it was still one of the top performing in the selfie group.

Your question is timely. I just upgraded in February to a iPhone XR. The 11 is out, there taking pre-orders.
As you do not state either your location or carrier it is difficult to offer more than generic advice.
Check with carriers in your area for the best promotions.
It is possible to get a new phone for free by changing carriers.
Yes, you can keep your number.

To stay within your desired budget constraints, have a look here: <https://www.consumercellular.com/Products?>. Not only a good selection of iPhone models at reasonable prices and on installment if you want, but if you're not on a contract, you'll find no contract obligation for service, and unlimited talk and text for $20/mo. Data comes at tiered rates. We have saved >$100/mo since switching from AT&T.

In our area here in the NE, Comcast/Xfinity cable customers can get Xfinity mobile service for $12/mo including unlimited talk and up to a 1 gig text/data shared between up to 5 lines. $40 / mo for unlimited text/data. It is an amazing deal. Also got $150 gift card for bringing my own phone and number with me when I changed. My net charge for first year's service has been almost zero.

That's a great deal. Unfortunately across the ocean Comcast/Xfinity doesn't serve. We semi-jokingly call it 'The Price of Paradise.'

I'm in your age group (71) and absolutely love the capabilities of my iPhone XR. The just coming out 11 is great successor to the XR and the photo editing abilities in iOS 13 are remarkable. I've been beta testing 13 since beta and I'm now on 13.1.

Since currently have the 5c the new iOS will be very familiar and the difference camera capabilities will blow you away.

When the opportunity presents itself I take either my Canon or Pentax DSLRs. But the iPhone is great when I don't the "full size" guys!

Stunning photo!!! Are refurbished only sold on line? I have At&T phone service and can check with them but anticipate they will only promote the 11. I wouldn't mind buying 7,8,9...but only if camera was "better."
I appreciate your advice.

I'm curious reading this link. Never thought of using my iPhone 8 plus for main photos, only for that shot I might miss when I'm not carrying my main camera. My question is printing from a iPhone photo. Can you print to any significant size like an 8x10 or 11x14? Any tips? I've noticed some courses online specifically for iPhone photography alone!

I tried going to a non-iPhone after being used to the IOS operating system and hated it. You should consider staying with the iPhone. I don't like the thought of paying $1000 for a new iPhone - but I am still using a 6s, so I guess I am overdue! The New iPhone 11Pro does some very interesting things with its 3-camera system. Consider looking into that. I think I am leaning that way. They even have an advanced HDR system coming with a planned upgrade in a few months.

Recently went from the Pixel 1 to the Pixel 3. The wide angle front lens for selfies has made me the envy of most of my iPhone wielding friends.

I had iPhones through #6 because I ran an app that was not available in Android. I then switched to a Pixel XL and finally got an OS that I could tailor to my needs and work style. I doubt I will ever go back to an iPhone. Their mail app is one of the worst I've ever experienced. I am looking forward to the astrophotography and other advanced camera capabilities being designed into the Pixel 4 - so even though I need a new phone, I'm waiting another month when the Pixel 4XL becomes available before I pull the trigger.

Thanks. Can you still buy a NEW 8+?

I believe so, but you can check with your carrier, amazon, or Best Buy to see what is available new.
