Lately, I've been seeing quite a few characters on TV, both US and foreign, wearing what amounts to photographer's vests. The pockets are usually empty, so I suspect the wardrobe people thought the vest would be a good look for the character. Yet, as I look at the character and the vest, I wonder why he's wearing it, with all those pockets going to waste. Some vests look fairly new, and others are old and worn, but the character tends to wear them all through the production.
Peaks viewer curiosity, perhaps this increases viewer numbers?
Jerry maybe their is more too the vests. I wear cargo pants most of the time.
I can keep the wallet safe. Phone not in my back pocket in another pocket.
My bill fold etc. I would be a little set conscious these days wearing the vests
I had. If they are working international they may have passport, wallet credit
cards etc etc in the vest.

in character reference....why are farmers always in tweed on UK telly? Most wear a one piece jump suit...
no idea - I don't own one!
I think people just see them as a practical way to carry lots of “stuff”, photography related or not. And they look really cool and outdoorsy😊
MANY pistol permit holders use these vests for covering up their handguns. They work very well for that use. Except criminals are catching on to the idea. Now a lot of guys I know won't wear one for fear of being shot first if they are caught up in a store or bank holdup. Many also use fishing vests as well.
I wear one most of the time anyway..I love them, always have. And they DO work great in a carry situation.
Kind of like the 'Progressive Insurance' commercials where "Flo" and other wear aprons. I still haven't found a reason for someone selling insurance to wear a butcher or baker's apron. Do you know why they would?
They use them to carry condoms. Look closely and see the tell tale circular impression that you find in your wallet.
Part of the costume, id's the photographer as the photographer. Otherwise he might just be a hobbyist.
I use a fly fisherman's vest for many things, including photography firld trips, since I don't fly fish. Many more pockets and a large rear pouch. Just my 2¢.
