Leica M10 Firmware Update

I just received an email telling me there is a firmware update for my Leica M10. In the past my local camera store has done firmware updates on my Nikon D800. I am not knowledgeable computers as much as I would like to be and don't want to screw this up or possibly my camera.

The screen has a Download Now area but what do I download to, an SD card or maybe a thumb drive. Then what? I would appreciate any assistance using the KISS principle please.

In the past (Nikon) I downloaded to a SD card and then with the card inserted into the camera went through the screen prompts. It was fairly simple but, it also was a long time ago.

Thank you. I will wait for other replies before attempting anything. Your idea sounds workable though. I also have not tried Youtube so may give that a try as well. I am just worried that I will mess something up on a great camera.

Thanks but that is kinda sorta what I have but in a different format. All I see is download. Yes I know it will download to my laptop. Then what. I guess I am specifically asking if an SD card is enough as in what size or do I need a thumb drive. I thank you for your reply but this is not something I am used to doing.

You need a card reader to transfer the file you downloaded to the SD card. SD card any size would do because the firmware is very small.

I have a MacBook Pro with a card reader slot on the side. Would this suffice. I do not have a separate card reader. Thanks for the information about the small size needed.

Download the instructions, and follow them.

That would do. The instruction said you need 200MB which is less than the smallest card you can typically buy today.

Yes, download the update to your SD card in your computer. Move the SD card to your camera to install the update.

Thanks to all who commented on the firmware update. I do have it completed now after taking the laptop and camera to my local camera store in Colorado Springs, Cameraworks. The owner and I were able to figure it out.

I am envious of those who said download it to the laptop and then to the SD card. Actually if you have done it a couple of times that is seemingly all there is. But if you have never done it and have little actual experience with computers it isn't quite so easy. I guess I equate it to me shooting expert time after time on a USMC rifle range out to 500 yards with iron sights and that seems/seemed easy to me. But no problem your suggestions gave me a starting point and it worked out great. I thank you all.

I love the Leica M10. My only problem is the focusing. When I was younger focusing was easier. Now that I am 73 it is a bit more difficult but still doable. I am never going to focus quickly though on a moving subject. I am starting to use the zone focusing method which helps. Other than that I love the crisp shutter click, the superb workmanship and sharpness of the lenses. I have a 28 Summarit, 35 Summilux and 50 Summicron. It is light to carry and does not take up much room. I have both a Leica M6TTL, the M10 and the three lenses plus the charger and cable in one small Tamron camera bag that will fit on any airline upper compartment. The Leica's are pricey but are nice. I forgot to mention that I also have the Visoflex focusing attachment as well.

I can't of course tell you to rush out and buy one but I have had a used but like new M9 that I didn't like as the shutter click was more of a whine to me. I sold it and used the money toward the M10.
