I would like to know which is a better all around camera, the Nikon P510 or the Canon SX40. I see some of you have the Canon and would love any feedback on both.

Before you make any decision between the two check the Canon Rumors website. There may be a new SX coming.

Google P510 vs SX40. I like to read reviews by people who do this all the time, rather than owners who happen to like what they own.

If you're not in a big hurry to buy something, wait two weeks before you decide.

Canon will be announcing the successor to the SX40 in the next ten days or so. It might be a month after that before you can get your hands on one, though.

It's not the brand, its the person behind the lens + the camera. I used Sony for years and got fantastic results - the brand makes no difference, its how its used that counts.

I agree. A different paint brush does not make you a better artist. It is just personal preference on which brush feels better in your hand or camera you are more comfortable using.

I checked out both cameras when I was looked and made my choice primarily based on the fully articulating LCD screen on the SX40 vs the strictly tilting LCD on the P510. Also the SX40 screen can be flipped so that it is 'enclosed' and not exposed to accidental contact.
I am sure picture-wise I would probably have been ok with the Nikon too, but I got a camera that suited MY requirements and HAVE NO REGRETS.

Get your hands on both, check out the LCD movements if you will be using that. Also, the SX40 DOES have a Hot Shoe!

Personally, I read the 'big' review sites, but don't take them as final because they get more technical and many are biased. After reading those reviews I look places like UHH for "Real World" examples of the results that people have gotten.
Use the "Search" selection at the top and enter "SX40" and reach those threads, then "Search" for "P510" and read those threads, looking at the pictures posted from both camera. Then make your FINAL decision after getting a Hands-On test to see if you like the "feel" of the camera.

I am not in the market for either of these particular cameras nor do I own one. I was however, looking to buy a dSLR and I did a lot of research between a Nikon and a Canon. The one article I came across that made the most logical statement said basically it is similar to the battle between Chevys and Fords. You have those who love a Chevy and will never but a Ford and vice versa. They are both good cameras. You need to look at each of their strong points and weak points and then decide which is most important to you. As some have already pointed out, it's not the camera, it the person behind it that makes the difference. Good luck with your decision!

I suggest you browse through the many reviews posted on Amazon from users of these cameras. Here's what I found:

For the Nikon P510: 122 and counting
For the Canon SX40: 277 and counting

YouTube would also be a very good source of information.

it's not versus, it's either-or.there are 2 or 3 more cameras you could include.

Go to a place that has both and play with them , see which one fits you better , the menu system is easier , etc . That will tell you which is better . Remember , its the brain behind and outside the camera that make the photo .
