Stunning photo!!! Are refurbished only sold on line? I have At&T phone service and can check with them but anticipate they will only promote the 11. I wouldn't mind buying 7,8,9...but only if camera was "better."
I appreciate your advice.

I suppose if you did a local search you might find somewhere local to buy one, but the lowest price deals are usually on line. AT&T will give you a price of around$450 - $500.
With each iteration of the iPhone the camera dynamic range seems to get better. They now have 3 lenses on the 11. The 7+ has two, which makes portraits very nice. The 8 takes even better photos and portraits than the 7+. I have not researched it, so I don’t have any clue about the X. Plus no one I know has one. They all have either an 8 or a 7+.
The thing I try to keep in mind when it comes to technology is that it constantly changes. I can only get the latest item available with as much memory as I can get and stay within my budget.

With the 11’s out this week, look for a new or refurbished 8+ The rear facing cameras were the same specs as the then top of the line iPhone X. My wife and I both have one. My only regret is not getting more than 64GB internal memory. I have many Photo Apps along with others, and need to delete about 15GB of Images in order to make more room.

I use mine for Astrophotography as well as photography. I use it much more than my Nikon DSLR because it’s always there and does such a great job with HDR, Portrait Mode, and Panoramic.

Be forewarned any of the Plus cameras will be Much larger than your 5C. But has an incredible screen. My wife was unsure going from a 5C to and 8+. But she’d never give it up now. If your eyes find tiny text hard to read, the larger screen along with upsizing your text size makes a huge difference in ease of reading texts & websites. Good luck in your upgrade.

I belong to the Tiny Shutter forum on Facebook and listen to their weekly podcasts. It’s a Photography Enthusiast site for iPhone users. One of the 4-5 moderators has an IPhone XR, his experience as a very serious photographer is the dynamic range on the XR is incredible, blowing away anything previously available in a Smartphone and most DSLR’s. As Leo Laporte said on his weekly technology podcast, while the lens and sensor on a Smartphone will never compare to a DSLR. The Smartphones produce a superior image because they are backed up by a dedicated supercomputer and amazing Computational Photography. That allows the Smartphone to do amazing DR by analyzing the scene, doing a burst, and combining them into a very realistic HDR image. Same with using 2 or more rear lenses to create portrait images that can be easily manipulated thru a jog wheel of lighting.

Would like feedback on cell phone options. I have Iphone 5c and am obviously in need of a serious upgrade.
As a novice photographer, with no desire to spend $1000+ if unnecessary, I value and appreciate honest comments. I am 76 years young and love the quick shots I get with my 5c, but it's time to move on. Help!

I have an iPhone 8+. I does well with photography. It’s two or three models removed from the new ones and should, though not cheap, should be relatively inexpensive as iPhones go.

I am a big believer in used equipment (and cars). Let someone else take the initial hit on depreciation. A couple of years ago my wife wanted an iphone X but I purchased her an iphone 6s. Not top of the line but it was almost $700 cheaper. She loves it and takes great photos. If you are used to the iphones, I would stick to them though many of the android phones have excellent cameras as well.

Check out gazelle.com for many good used phones for almost all the carriers or even unlocked if you want. I have purchased several ipads and phones from them and all have been great.

I have a Pixel XL and I am now due for a replacement. I will likely replace it with the Pixel 4XL - the Google phones have the best and most intuitive implementation of the Android OS, they are rugged, and their cameras are always best in class - even better than the Samsung S10s and the current iPhones. My old phone had an OLED screen, which was great, but had gotten "burned in" - the current ones don't seem to have that problem.

On what are you basing your claim that the Pixel 4XL has a better camera than the iPhone 11 Pro?

Consider buying last year's model or a used phone.

Very pleased with my 7Plus and it’s amazing camera. My A77 and SX50 getting used far less now. Still getting updates for the phone.

I have an iPhone XR and it’s great. Get an 11 if you can afford it. Contrary to some opinions, these have real cameras and the new iPhone 11 is getting good reviews. And get a selfie stick. They come in handy for lots of things.

Even though the iPhone 7 is supported now and for a while to come, that may change in the not so distant future. (Apple is well known for this). I would recommend going with at least an iPhone 8+ or the iphone XR. They both feature excellent cameras. I have the XR and am very happy with it. The pictures are very good. It is the camera I always have with me. I have a DSLR, and a bridge camera for travel, but the phone comes in handy when I don't have one of those cameras with me.

My vote is for the XR if and unless you can afford the 11. The difference in cost between all the models isn't that great until you get to the 11Pro. Opting for the XR or the 11 keeps you in the current models and therefore they are less likely to be dropped from support six or seven years from now.

I'm facing that dilemma now with the sweetheart having my old 5s and me with a 6s. Better for me to get two new phones in a package deal than just upgrade one and give her my 6s that will no longer be supported in a couple of years.

Simply stated, I have fun with photos, along with seeing humor in most situations. I snap away for personal reasons and enjoy sharing with family and friends. NO ASPIRATIONS to become professional and rarely, close to never, take a selfie. When I search for the diff. in the camera component of iPhones, the technical aspects go beyond my pay scale. Is it too much to desire a good, under $500-600, simple cell phone. To me, the descriptions oversell, using fancy words to avoid saying "no basic change." I will probably try to find an iPhone 8, unsure about used or new. Obviously, my 5c shows I don't need to keep up with the Jones. Would rather spend my money on the trip of a lifetime: just returned from 2 week African Safari and son insisted I take his Nikon 5200 (on auto.)...glad I did, but heavy camera.
pmorin...you are the best....and a local OC???

Thanks. Can you still buy a NEW 8+?
