I am looking for a camera bag to take on car trips. The catch is that it needs to be able to accommodate a large DSLR like a Nikon D850 with the battery grip, or a Nikon D5 and 3 average sized zoom lenses. It can be either a traditional over-the-shoulder bag, or a back-pack bag.
I no longer live in an area with a pro camera store, so I can’t go to the store and measure them. So I’m stuck ordering from the internet. I’ve looked at many camera web retailers. But they are all very bad at indicating what model camera would fit In their bags.
Any suggestions?
Do you have a bag now that doesn't meet your needs? IF so, use the measurements of that to compare with specs of other bags to move you in the right direction. Remember, you need room for more than just a body and lenses when you travel.
Otherwise, you need to read specs of different bags and they will specify pro camera body (meaning either DSLR body with grip or the pro size equivalent) regular DSLR or smaller. Lenses will also be generically mentioned for fit. Also read the reviews as some people will list what they put in their bag.
Bags almost always list dimensions that you can compare to the approx. gear you want to pack. I.E. your grouped camera and lenses might measure X inches across and high vs. the interior dimensions of the bag.
The strongest shoulder bags that I have ever seen are the Lowepro Magnum series 200AW, 400AW, and 650AW. I have the 200AW. It's a fairly large bag. I can put my D500 with attached 80-400mm lens in the bottom. The 400AW and 650AW are even larger. The Lowepro Magnum 650AW interior dimensions are 16.1 inches long, 11.2 inches wide, and 11 inches tall. What's good also is that they have a one-piece molded bottom that is strong. It won't sag from the weight of the gear inside.

I have the same bodies, I use Think tanks Street Walker Pro, Fits the D850 with Nikon Grip, and a Nikon 70-200 ƒ2.8 mounted, D5 (no lens) Nikon 24-70 ƒ2.8 and Nikon 300mm ƒ4 plus a Speed light Sb5000, along with accessories.
When I need more room I use Think Tank's Street Walker Hard Drive: Fits the D850 with Nikon Grip, and a Nikon 70-200 ƒ2.8 mounted, D5 (no lens) Nikon Z6, Nikon 24-70 ƒ2.8 and Nikon 14-24 ƒ2.8, Nikon plus a couple Speed lights, Sb5000, SB910. Lots of room for accessories. I also when traveling used the TT Airport International. Also use the f-Stoppers backpacks. Shimoda Explore 60 Backpack. BTW, I purchase backpacks from B&H via internet even though I live 14 miles from the store in NYC. I'd rather pay the $10 return fee than pay the $16 toll from NJ and $35 parking.

Try an outdoor store (REI/EMS/BassPro), get a backpack that is large enough to hold your equipment with padded covers on the gear. Easy and probably better for less $$$.

It seems that the manufacturers provide dimensions and frequently show a photo with gear, including what can be seen as large gear, arranged in the bag.
Here is a good example.

Thinktank.com that what they do designed by pros for pros.
Call B&H. Their phone reps are awesome. They’ll help point you in the right direction with no B.S. They really know their stuff. Example, when I was in the market for a laptop and knew I wanted a MacBook Pro, I couldn’t decide on size, ram, memory. The guy asked me a lot of questions and helped me choose the right one and it wasn’t the most expensive one either.
This bag works for me. It call hold 6DMKII, battery grip with a 70-200mm f/2.8 connected and easy to retrieve when you want to shoot in a hurry. Top portion can hold extra lens and has space for a 15" laptop, bottle holder. Bottom pouch can hold extra batteries, SD/CF cards, wires, ets.
Best part you don't have to get into the piggy bank to purchase this item. $100 is a good price for sure....

Boy, am I glad you asked. Here it is, I just bought this bag for my D850 and D5, with lenses.
It used to sell for well over $100.00, but B&H has reduced the price, AND, it has NIKON on it. What could be better, OH, it also has a great padded strap.
