It's bad enough that I have to pay an annual fee to shop in Sam's, but they have Plus Membership, which costs even more. I found a surprise benefit of Plus, though. I like going to town early, and Sam's lets certain people in before the regular opening time. I used to have a Business Membership, so I could start shopping at 7:00 AM, before the crowds and traffic appeared. I recently discovered that there is no more Business class, and I have to pay about $60 more to shop early. What to do???
Looking over the benefits of Plus, I saw that they have free shipping. I love free shipping. I placed an order for large packs of paper towels and toilet paper, a gallon of olive oil, and a box of three gallons of Clorox. All four arrived at my house without me even having to open my car door - with no delivery charge. Of course, they're not going to ship meat and dairy, but that still leaves almost half the items on my shopping list eligible for free shipping. Like Amazon Prime, I'm paying indirectly for shipping, but I know I'll come out ahead after a year. They also give $10 back for each $500 spent - not a big deal for me, though.

Hey Jerry, I've worked for Sam's club for 24 years. The first 10 as a manager and the last 14 as a part-time associate working 8 to 12 hours a week. I have been told by quite a few people they didn't shop Sam's or Costco or BJ's because they didn't like having to pay for a membership to shop somewhere. My answer to them is simple. They pay everyone a membership, it's just collected a little at a time with each purchase they make. I give as an example: Go try to buy a pair of Savane or Kenneth Cole Reaction trousers. At a department store they will have the same 65.00 price tag that the ones at Sam's Club has. Now, unless you go to a small boutique shop, you will never pay 65.00. The department store will have a banner showing 25% off -- this brings the price to 48.75. Then there will be a coupon that will knock off another 15% -- now the price is 41.44. Then of course if you use their charge card, knock off another 10% --- now the price is down to 37.30! Great price, right! Or you could just go to Sam's and get the slacks for 19.98 to 21.98. I tell people if they just bought one of each color of those slacks, they have covered the price of their membership in one purchase! Every couple of years a news agency like USA Today or an on line news agency comes out with a report that shows if people would shop the clubs -- any of them, not just Sam's, they could save 33% on their groceries. Jerry, in addition to free shipping, be sure to take advantage of the extra year of warranty on major appliances. If you buy a large screen TV and get the 3 year extended warranty you will get 4 years. Their extended warranties are much less expensive than through a lot of other places. Of course, I feel I'm "preaching to the choir" since you already have experienced the value of the plus membership. One thing of interest -- the membership is what the clubs use as their profit. A lot of clubs would be in the red if not for what they collect in membership fees. A lot of clubs make a small profit in addition to the memberships and really busy clubs make 3 to 5% above the memberships due to volume efficiency. Not having to make a killing on profit on merchandise really frees the buyers up to seek out really outstanding values for the members. Some things they bring in you just have to shake your head and wonder how they can sell an item so cheaply.
