My wife and I will be leaving Michigan on Sept 22 and heading to the Sight and Sounds theater in Lancaster. We will be travelling through Ohio and Pennsylvania before arriving in Lancaster. Can anyone provide me info on photo opportunities or things to see/do either in route or while in Lancaster County We will be on the road for approximately 10 days.
Thanks a bunch
Lots has been mentioned but I haven't read the full log, but Pa is full of covered bridges.... The Steelers stadium is a walking distance from old Town Pittsburgh. Three Rivers come together there. Pittsburg is a lot lower than surrending area, so incline tail cars all around the area.
Johnstown is good also.
Hey Jim, I live just up the road. You’ve gotten so many great suggestions of what to see and do. Check out the literature available and the websites and do what looks good to you.
My favorite thing is to just drive around, shoot what looks interesting. Have fun.
I really appreciate all the comments. Now to print them all off and assemble them in order of travel. I am looking forward to doing a lot of shooting on this trip and hope to post some once I get back. Thanks everyone Much appreciated
look up Longwood Gardens
1001 Longwood Rd, Kennett Square, PA 19348
google maps says 39 to 45 miles and approximately 1hr from the city of Lancaster.

And Yoder's is better than Shady Maple.

Park Place (formerly the famous Zinn's Diner) is where a lot of locals still eat.
The food is average at best. For breakfast or lunch, I prefer Dave's Diner in Adamstown, about 5 minutes east of Park Place on 272. Another excellent place for breakfast and lunch is the Pancake Farm on RT 272 in Ephrata.

OH! MY!!!! You dropped the "h" on your second use of Pittsburgh!!!! That is a high crime out there!
Depending on your travel route, you will passing close to, or through Amish country in Ohio. If you are close to Cleveland, there is the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Canton has the football Hall of fame. Dover, Ohio has the Warther Museum of hand carvings (Abe Lincoln's funeral train in approx. 1/25 scale.). South of Saint Clairsville, Oh (I-70) is a stand of virgin timber called Dysart's Wood. Moundsville, WV has the Adena Indian mound and museum and the haunted Moundsville prison right across the street. There is also the Palace of Gold. The Pittsburgh Science Center also has a WWII submarine on display and there is the Phipps Conservatory. Just a few off the top of my head. If you have a smart phone, or GPS, keep checking them for sites.
If you want a scenic drive home, take I-81 down to Hagerstown, MD, then I-68 across to Morgantown, WV. Beautiful country.

IMHO Shady wins on value, Yoders charges for coffee and has a smaller selection, however they do have waitress service for the beverages and are quieter, at least at breakfast which is when we have been at Yoders.

Yoder's has full server service if you order from the menu. Have you been there since they expanded? As far as value, I much prefer quality food like they serve at Yoder's over quantity like what's available at Shady Maple. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Shady Maple is bad, it's not. It's too industrial strength for me. As for Shady Maple having a larger selection, I'm not too sure about that. There are two food lines at Shady Maple, one is a duplicate of the other, same selection. What I do like about Shady Maple is the self serve beverage stations.
Another good spot, especially for breakfast, is Oregon Dairy on 272 west of Akron. There buffet line isn't real big but they have a good menu and if you leave hungry it's your own fault.
There's another place we use to go for dinner just north of Lititz; I can't remember the name but the food was good.
These days, for breakfast or lunch we go to Dave's Diner in Adamstown.

I miss Big Amos at Zinn's. In the 60's my parents would always stop there as part of our annual vacation. We would leave McKeesport (south of Pittsburgh), head east and stop there for dinner before heading further to whatever our destination was for that year. Big Amos was always standing there waiting.
I hear he has a new home at the Hershey Farm Restaurant and Inn in Ronks, Pa about 20 miles south. Of course that would be the new Amos from 1969. Here is the Amos I remember.

Yes, the official name is the Railroaders Memorial Museum. The basic difference between the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and the Railroaders Memorial Museum is, one puts more emphasis on the Pennsylvania Railroad (Altoona) and one does not.
Is the museum owned by the same guy who has basically ruined the concession at "Horsehoe Curve" by charging admission and making it such a tourist trap?
