I was keenly interested in this camera and thinking about upgrading. DPReview just added it to their studio test scene comparison and I did a thorough comparison it to my A7R3.
On one hand it was disappointing to see that the image quality didn't match the R73 but on the other hand...I'm going to save some money. In my opinion its not worth upgrading.

Good decision. Glad the GAS passed.
Just upgraded from an Alpha 850 to an A7R3. First experience with an electronic viewfinder. Still need to do a little tweaking with the menu options. Love the metering system & overall handling of the camera.
If you already have the Sony a7r3, I wouldn't upgrade to the a7r4 either. 42 megapixels is more than enough resolution. The a7r3 has the longer life battery, that the a7r2 did not have. For those who own the a7r2, I think those owners would be interested in the 61 megapixels a7r4, and the longer life battery. The megapixels war, as some photographers call it, does sell cameras. As for the IQ between the a7r3 and the a7r4 cameras. That can only be determined by having two testings with the same high quality Sony FE lens. If the IQ is better on the a7r3 than the a7r4. Then shame on Sony. That 61 megapixels camera is not cheap. Rumor has it, that Nikon is interested in that sensor. That is, if Sony is willing to let Nikon use it?
Joe, thanks for the info. I too have been suffering from GAS. I will have to look at the A9II when it shows up.
I knew there was an advantage in sticking to Pentax for my FF. Doesnt look like there will ever be a successor to provoke GAS.

Plus, they have taken $500.00 off the current A7RIII.
An upgrade shouldn't be just for IQ I think, but in that regard I read DPReview used a beta RAW conversion that is sub-par. The difference in IQ is greater than DPReview's Studio Comparison Tool indicates.
The R4 also has a much-improved body boasting a new ruggedness, improved weather sealing and better ergonomics. Focus speed & accuracy is said to be better as well. The R4 is not just an R3 with a larger sensor.

I know very well what the changes between the two cameras are. They are minor in all practical respects. The standout improvement is the 61 MP.
What evidence do you have concerning the image quality?
Watch what test you believe. Several others showed a marked improvement in resolution in the 61 mp A7RIV vs the A7RIII. I sold my A7RIII and got my A7RIV yesterday Sept. 12th. Including the increased resolution the A7RIV has 50 new and/or improved features over the A7RIII. If you are happy with your A7RIII, no need to upgrade at all. And now they can be bought for lower new and used prices, so kind of a bargain now. For what I shoot, I am happy to upgrade for all the better features and resolution and better cropping abilities. My clients can use the extra IQ as well as for my personal work. Here is a shot of my new A7RIV, shot with my old Samsung S5 cell phone. Taking it to the Caribbean tomorrow for two weeks and can post some shots to this thread if folks want that. Cheers

By all means...I'd love to see the files. My decisions is not carved in stone.
