Yes, the same people who have run the slave trade for over a thousand years, the reason there's a Kuran in the White House and the reason the US Navy was created. The term leatherneck is from these first sailors who wore thick leather bands around their necks to try and keep their heads on.
I'm reminded that we all know the phrase, "Remember the Alamo!" And yet few of us know what it actually means. I do hope that our remembering 9-11 is done better. A friend of mine who teaches in a local public high school described to me what their students did yesterday. It was all readings from reports that were current at the time as well as videos from news and other sources. Then, they asked (and answered questions) for a long time. I guess it was quite a good assembly.
