Hello all,
I went to use my fairly new Nikon 2.8 300mm vr2 lens today. I only used it twice. It seems it will not autofocus and just hunts . I here the drive motors running or something else not sure because the focus just remains blurred . I can manually focus but when I select Auto focus On it goes out of focus
I have VR normal on, full selected, memory recall middle off. I have tried other settings as well.
I’m using this with a D810 body and tried other lens and the camera seems ok
I appreciate your help and thank you for your time
You have a 5 year warranty if you bought that lens new. Since other lenses work I would recommend a trip to Nikon for a service check.
A polarizer caused that for me on a similar lens. You didn't mention it, but was a problem for me. Took it off and focus was fine.

Hello all, br I went to use my fairly new Nikon 2.... (

Clean the contacts in the lens base where it meets your camera body. Make sure when you use a lens cleaning cloth that the pins go up and down as you rub over them. When I mounted my 300 2.8, I made sure the lens was clicked solidly in place, I even tried to move it back and forth after mounting to assure it was seated.
If all else fails call Nikon at 1-800-645-6687
Is the AF hunting fast? Or slow... if it is slow, the motor might be bad. Since the AF is running, it may be something other than the lens.
Clean lens and camera contacts.
Turn off VR and memory.
Pull and check the drop in filter.
Try another body if you can.
Try Live View if that body supports it.
Warranty might come into play. When I have the scenario you describe, it is usually self inflicted (for me) with a menu setting. Maybe save your camera settings and try to reset it.

If using a polarizer on an autofocus camera (film or digital) or with metering on a digital, it should be a CIRCULAR polarizer (CPL), rather than a LINEAR polarizer (PL).
I have the same lens and never have had this problem. Advice given above is spot on. The contacts on the lens and the camera have to be clean. And there has to be enough light for AF to work properly. And the lens settings needs to be correctly set.
I would reset all of the lens settings one at a time with VR set to Off and see if anything fixes the problem.
Make sure you have a clear filter installed in the filter holder in the barrel of the lens.
Just for kicks, replace the battery in the D 810 with another one and see if that fixes anything. Then try and reload the D810's firmware.
If you send the lens to Nikon, send the D810 too.

What are you trying to focus on? The background has everything to do with the AF function. The area has to have some contrast present in order to focus. For example, you can't focus on a blue sky, white walls, or a baby's soft face without some contrast being present (dark patches or lines)
I tried what you mentioned also with the exception of a another body. Trying to find someone I know
Thanks so much for the information
I did check filter and swapped batteries
Thank for your help
I tried to focus on a sign that was 75-80 feet away
Thank for reply I have no polarizer installed
I did describe it correctly but it seem like the motor is running but not moving the focus at all just remained blurred. I also not the Auto focus mode is not shown on camera and I tried selecting modes but nothing shows. My other lens show the modes
