👋🏼 Hello My name is Angela, I have loved photography since I can remember. I have always been a canon person, however I’m thinking I want to explore the Nikon world. Any/all advice would be greatly appreciated. I don’t have a business or anything, it’s mainly just my favorite hobby that I wish could be my job lol. I want to get better so hopefully I can make this dream come true, so one more question, anyone have a recommendation on a online or at home photography school? Thank you! Nice to meet alll of you ;)

Welcome to UHH.
Nikon and Canon both make top quality DSLRs. You can't go wrong with either one.

Welcome.

I believe the best plan for picking a camera is to make a table - perhaps a spreadsheet - of camera characteristics, and then go to a store and actually handle the reasonable candidates ..... making the decision yourself on the characteristics that matter to you,

Need to know a few things. What is your budget? What type of subjects do you want to shoot (eg., landscapes, portraits, groups, buildings, flowers, small birds, insects, all of the above)? Do you also want to shoot video? Are you open to buying used equipment? What do you want to do with your pics (eg. make prints, post them on forums like UHH and Facebook and Flickr)?

Hello Angela:

Couple of thoughts. Before purchasing a camera try to identify one or two candidates (someone mentioned a spreadsheet) and then consider renting them on line fora few days and give them a trial run. Udemy always seems to be running specials for first time buyers courses can be bought for as little as 9.99. You can buy three or four for less than $50 and access is permanent. Although I have bought a lightroom class I have not ad the time to view it.

Good Luck!

Check out my name and that will tell you which way I lean. First, welcome to the site. Second, you should seriously consider Sony Mirrorless. If it was 1969 all over again I would have gone with them. But alas, it is too late for me grasshopper, but, not for you.
My main reason for Sony is because my favorite lenses of all time, Zeiss, makes auto focus lenses for Sony. And Sony is starting to produce big guns, like the new 600 f4, with all new technology within the lens.

https://www.creativelive.com/ If you download the app you can pick everyday 1lesson for free.
If you have any experience with SLR than I would start with a Nikon d7200-7500, canon 80d. No experience with dslr than the Nikon d3500 or canon t6s-t7i....don’t forget the mirror less options. Mirror less I don’t have any experiences .....good luck

Hi Angela, I recently completed the course in Digital Photography at the Open University in the UK. It is an on-line program offered at a college level and quite intense. It is a ten week program, with lessons, video and participant collaboration. There is a mid-term exam for 10% of the final grade and a project at the end for the remaining 90%. I found it to be an amazing program and helped me immensely to improve my skills. It is not free, but reasonable and (in my opinion) worth every penny, If you want more details or an insight into the course expectations, email me at “imagine@paskowitz.ca”.

Another worthwhile program is offered by the New York Institute of Photography. Also very good. Be wary of sub-standard programs such as the Hollywood Art Institute, etc. If you want something less intense and less formal there are really good YouTube videos on most subject areas.

Make a list of what what you think you’d like to shoot and what features you’d like in a camera. Hopefully you have a real camera store near you, not Best Buy, where you can talk to someone to help you sort through the myriad of choices available. Do have a budget in mind!

You could also rent to try before you buy any new camera.

Welcome. i cannot recommend a school per se, but there is a ton of free knowledge online. Just have to dig it up ... like buried treasure.
I can't think of a worse time to try Nikon. Innovation has been slow to visit them, and frankly ... they are on their heels. If you want something new, and exciting....
Pan, Fuji, Sony.

Angela, Welcome to UHH.
I sincerely believe you won’t find any significant difference between Canon and Nikon (or many other brands) where it really counts, and that is in the area of image quality (IQ). Could it be you are looking to improve your results and think, maybe a change in equipment will help do that? Sadly, it really won’t. Improving your output is like the joke about what’s the best way to get to Nashville? Practice, practice, practice. Along with that, seek advice here or at other sites. You’ll find many qualified members here that are willing to help. Least of all, don’t be bashful!

I would go to a store. Pick up and handle several cameras to find one that fits you, comfortably. It's worth you time and effort as you will be handling it a lot if you stay with it. Uncomfortably you won't stay with it.
