I’m prepping for a upcoming photo trip that involves flying, and rather than spend many dollars on a carryon rolling camera bag, I am investigating camera-oriented inserts that can be used with my existing suitcase. The suitcase that I would probably use has interior dimensions of 19.5x13x6.5. I would appreciate any experiences or recommendations.

Pluck foam lets you customize to any shape by pulling out the little squares https://www.amazon.com/FS100RS-Bundle-customizable-self-adhesive-separate-bottom/dp/B06WGW73RM/ref=asc_df_B06WGW73RM/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309820141085&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=456569269339162883&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9052828&hvtargid=pla-524707206880&psc=1

My simplistic solution may provoke some disdain but it involved no purchases and solved two problems. I use a small rollerbag carryon similar to yours and I have two well padded camera bags with only slightly smaller dimensions: a backback and a sling bag. I simply pack the camera stuff into the bag of choice and fit the bag into the carryon. If perchance I'm confronted with a situation where there's not enough space for a roller bag of any kind and I'm forced to gate check, I simply pull out the backpack or sling and carry it into the plane, and gate check the roller bag.

This is my solution too - saves a lot of money & is dead easy.

I have used lens wraps to securely wrap lenses to put in a rolling bag. I make sure to pack tightly, so there is very little if any movement with the items packed. I have done this several times traveling by air. Security will sometimes open and check my bag. The lenses are protected well. I also use a back pack, but having the heavy lenses in the rolling bag saves my back. I do always separate the camera from the lens, pack each separately.

Yup, me too. Available from Amazon and well made and definitely reasonable on the wallet.

Thank you. Intuitively, this seems perfect because it minimizes wasted space in the bag (sort of like rolling up your shirts). I assume that you are using something like the “lens wraps” or “equipment protection wraps” on sale at B&H?

I am thinking that this technique, maybe in combination with the previous suggestions of a smaller insert or camera bag in the suitcase, would be the way to go.

The lens wraps I used were Sigma wraps. Tamron also makes them. You can purchase them on Amazon or at B&H. They definitely work well to protect the lenses. They are large square with velco at 3 of the corners.

Check this out on Amazon.

Pelican sells inserts separately from their cases. I have not checked sizes but they may have one you can use. The foam inserts require that you pull out pieces of foam to fit your equipment so I don't know why you couldn't adjust the outside dimensions also. I have to say though that you might be much happier with the less work involved just having a case that doesn't require the extra manipulations. B&H has had some hard sided and travel packs with inserts on sale lately. The pelican light inserts are really easy to adjust but wouldn't be sufficient for a non-hard size case.
