I grew up in central Pa, and was surrounded every Fall by great Fall colors. I've seen similar in NY, New England, Ohio, KY, TN, VA, Smokey Mountains. But I don't think any of them compare to Aspens changing in Colorado or Utah.

I have taught fall color workshops in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan every year since 1986 around Munising. The colors are always fabulous, though, they can vary a week from year to year. I also live within sight of the Grand Tetons and color there is wonderful too when it happens - also varies. The Tetons are wonderful for yellow aspen reflections with huge mountains. Michigan is first-rate for intense reds, oranges, and yellows with mirror reflections in the numerous small wild lakes that are everywhere. If you like intense color and reflections, Michigan would be tough to beat. And if you get snow and peak color at the same time, your heart pounds faster!

I want to again thank everyone for their contribution. Some are fortunate to live in areas of good color. Others will travel to find color. Travel is good too.

I especially want to thank those familiar with the Upper Peninsula Of Michigan. Your comments have helped to make me look forward to my visit there even more.

Thank you for the information. I understand there are nearly 200 named waterfalls in the U.P. for Michigan...I had a hard time booking a room with my favorite motel chain.

Northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s U.P.

We go every year the first full weekend in October, for work, and it always seems to be peak week when we’re there. I look so forward to it! Gorgeous! We always make a trip to Bond Falls, Porcupine Mountain and last year we stumbled upon another falls, though I don’t remember exactly where it was- Interior Township is what the pics on my phone says. Lots to see there- I’m looking for new locations in the area myself this year. My husband is an avid fisherman but prefers to stay off the lakes so we’re always hopping around looking for the hidden gems (trout streams, etc.) the colors are amazing! This is a phone shot of the Interior Township location. That’s an old railroad track above it that’s now a walking trail.

This is sort of a narrow question and probably late for this year, but, based on your actual experience, What was your best photo trip for fall color, preferably with a number of impressive waterfalls?

Two years ago I did the Watkins Glen, New York area.
Last year I did the Ricketts Glen, Pennsylvania area.

This year I am booked for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

I want to plan ahead for future years.

Thank you.

In the Sierra Nevada Mtns near Mammoth CA. (Sorry not many waterfalls).

We live in a very picturesque part of Pa. Love the whole area and streams for the opportunities to catch fall colors. Also, state parks abound not far from us. They are maintained and have restrooms, in case that is important.

Watkins Glen is a fantastic wonder of Nature, Geological wonder, beautiful Waterfalls cascading down from the Canyon rim High above, it has been referred to as the Eastern U.S. Grand Canyon. If you go, make sure there has been a Rainy season before, to enjoy the Majesty of the many Waterfalls.

I'll bet it is. I've been through there but not in the fall.
