I just purchased a 1 TB G external hard drive. I got the Solid State version. A bit pricey but worth it to me

I use a 2TB WD hard drive to save my RAW files and a 3TB HD to back up everything. After five years they are less than hand full

I can. Lightning strike, power line surge, power supply failure, fire, flood, theft, both become corrupted, etc. I have seen a number of double drive failures, hence the need for an off-site DR copy.

Well, two inexpensive (mirrored) HDs are better than one, but why not two mirrored enterprise drives? Do they cost more? Yes, but how much is your data worth? I have been in IT since 1965 and specialized in data storage with all the major data storage players for the last 25, and I have seen every type of drive failure imaginable including double drive failures in RAID sets. A data loss for any of those companies was a mortal sin, followed by a loss of future business, so I BELIEVE in data integrity. All drives eventually fail, but in general, enterprise drives take longer.

If your data is important to you, I have the following advice. Take it or leave it - almost every week we have some poor soul start a thread that begins with: “my HD (or drives) failed, and I lost 30 years of images”.: the advice is: keep 3 copies of your data - a working copy, a local backup and an off-site DR copy. Buy the best enterprise drives you can afford and if external, keep them cool with a fan. Your choice.

You are preaching to the Choir here. Paranoia is a working skill.

I keep one copy of everything off site, and two on site. I’ve lost nothing since doing that.

I've used a variety of external HD's: 2,4 and 5TB to back up Lightroom. They are okay, but not as stable as a solid state drive. The others are at risk of failure because of their spinning discs. I'm waiting for the price to come down on the 4TB ones. Why the heck are they so darned expensive?

I had an IT company with a retail store. Sold both brands and both were very reliable, and very few were brought back in for performance or mechanical issues. My recommendation is you can't go wrong with either one.

My approach with the current costs is to get two. Then, every week or more I swap them out.

Now, I just back up to them, so that works. I run a little tool that copies all images, settings and database to the external drive. That gives me a point in time backup.

The spare drive then goes somewhere else (like work). Then I have two drives with one somewhere else.

You didn't say what you want them for, so maybe I'm suggesting something that isn't useful.

I use two

WD BLACK 6 GB DRIVES AS BACKUPS. Never had a problem.

Also agree with Daryl above. I have had both drives in ever increasing sizes for many years, and none have ever failed me. I replace my computer and retire and wipe the old drives after 5 years or so, and physically destroy the drive. Cheap insurance.

Being somewhat compulsive and afraid of losing files I have 4 four tb external drives with all my digital photographic files on each.. Presently I have WD and Seagate and have had no problems with either brand. In the past I had a Lacie fail and have increased to four copies, as the drives are now relatively inexpensive.

Don't go with Lacie whatever you do.

They may have been an issue, but since Seagate bought them, they use Seagate drives exclusively. My LaCie 2Big system is great and contains two Seagate Ironwolfe 8GB drives. I also have a Thunderbolt/USB 3 drive of 1GB in their HD Orange case that has been going strong for over five years. Best of luck.

Just saw this from Newegg, a WD 10TB for under $160. Here is the link if anyone is interested.
