Re: Itsnoelb (choice of cameras). I totally agree with QueencityThe Nikon D350 with a few lenses is by far the best choice. Its light, simple to use and produces high quality images. But if the buddy rules out lens changing, then go with a bridge camera. The bridge cameras that have been mentioned have 1/2.3 inch sensors. Interestingly Canon has increased the number of megapixels withought increasing the size of the sensors in the SX60 and SX 70. Accordingly, they must have smaller pixels. Pixel size is one factor in determining image quality. Only the Sony RX10IV has a larger sensor - one inch (actually less than an inch.) But it costs $1,700. I own a Canon SX50 and am satisfied with it. If I were choosing a bridge camera for a friend it would be a Panasonic Lumix FZ300. Its lens is long enough for many purposes, and it has a steady f2.8 aperture. Let us know what your choice is. Davidb

The Nikon P1000 is a good camera, shoots raw, good zoom but it weighs 3.5 lbs. A good alternative is the Nikon B700. Also shoots raw, good zoom about $500 new.

Definitely something to think about before plopping down one large for the P1000. Thanks for that.

If he wants something that is pocketable and always with him, has nice touch screen for easy settings, AND A 1" SENSOR..... I recently bought the Canon GX9 Mark II and love it. Around $480 new but I bought a mint used one for $290 . or also look at the Canon G7X mark II for $650.

The B700 has been discontinued, and is no longer available new.

It amazes me how some folks apparently fail to read the OP's description of what is wanted/needed. In this case he mandated a good SIMPLE camera with NO LENS CHANGING.... and yet several go on to recommend DSLR cameras or 3 lb bridge cameras such as the Nikon P1000. Wanted a camera for family activities such as birthday parties and Christmas. Nothing said about needing a 125X zoom.

Having interchangeable lenses doesn’t mean that the OP needs to ever change a lens - he can install one (zoom) lens and never change it. Also most MILC and DSLRs can be set to full auto and have AF - you just have to turn it on and press the shutter - can’t get much more simple than that. Just because a camera HAS features doesn’t mean you have to USE them (and they’re always available if the OP wants to progress at a later time).

I have a friend who sold his SX50 12.1 megapixels camera, to purchase the SX60, 16 megapixels, with a focal range of 1365mm, and he never regretted doing so. The SX60 is not a crap camera, as you claim.

Megapixel & Focal Wide & Zoom were Good, but there were Other Issues that Turned me Off with the SX-60.

With the Current SX-70, No Hot Shoe for Separate Flash which is Important to Me & Other Photographers, & Again I Use a Lot of Indoor Flash at Events, & would Drain My Battery & would have to Spend $40 to $50 Dollars to Buy a Backup Battery, Just Bought a Flash with Slave Capacity, which is Good cause I Can't Use my Flash Boosters I Bought from Ritz Cameras for my Old Film Cameras from the 90's cause they are Digital & wont Work with Digital Cameras Cause of a Different Process.

Canon Screwed Up & Left Out with the SX-70😠

The SX70HS is a superzoom bridge camera and it has a built-in flash. It's not what one would consider your typical events camera and it doesn't really need a hotshoe and if you require a hotshoe then the SX70HS is not the camera for you. I don't know about your flash units but I can trigger my external flash units with the flash on the SX70HS, thus making the need for a hotshoe a moot point. I'm pretty sure that Canons engineers didn't screw up and may be just a wee bit smarter when it comes to camera design then your average UHH poster.

Look at the Panasonic DMC ZS-10 It has an excellent low light built in lens and some zoom capability. They are around $500 to 700. But, if you use the zoom you lose the F1.4 lens capability

So which Pansonic lumix did you really mean? The Zs10 was released 9 years ago. Did you mean the DMC-ZS100 in which case they are just under $500 and don't go up to $700?

Oops, It is the Lumix LX10 and on eBay they were down to $350 It was the fastest fixed lens on a camera. I bought it for my sisters birthday. and got to play with it. It does have a flash too. But zoom the lens and you lose the F1.4, I figure if you are close to your subject, you have a great shot. It zooms nicely as well

A buddy is looking for a simple good camera. Budget (he can do anything) 1000 bucks . Famiy type grandkids Birthday Christmas type. Decent video, some vacation scene stuff. So...some low light, with a zoom ....I have a few recommendations after research but...oh..no lens changing.....anyway. Without me telling you what mine would be, help me.

Thank you all. The ones I was thinking have been the most recommended.

You could look at the Ricoh GRiii. 28mm f/2.8 lens on a pocketable APS-C camera, is similar to the rangefinder cameras I started off with fifty years ago.
