As you can tell from the comments above, there are lots of good photo targets in DC. The monuments on the Mall and around the Tidal Basin are a good place to start, as most of them are lit. Iconic shots include the Lincoln Memorial, White House, and Capitol building. If you want some ideas, see my Shutterfly page below.

Definitely the Vietnam Memorial “The Wall” should be considered. It is right next to the Korean War memorial …

The Vietnam and Korean war memorials are at least 1/4 mile apart, on either side of the Reflecting Pool. The important thing that the OP needs to know is that seeing all the major highlights of the National Mall in a single afternoon/evening will involve a LOT of walking.

The Jefferson Memorial is currently experiencing a restoration process and looks horrendous with its dome encumbered with architectural supports. And the south side of the Capitol building is also getting a big makeover with scaffolding and shrouding to minimize environmental impacts from the surface work. Same with several legislative office buildings on both the south and north sides of the Capitol.
I've captured some wonderful hand-held images inside both the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials but if the water is running in the FDR memorial, a monopod or quick setup/breakdown tripod will be helpful, so long as no Capitol Police catch you. They're pretty picky about such things.
We moved to Capitol Hill twelve years ago and I still can't get enough of the photo opportunities to see DC in the best light. While I'm recovering from major back surgeries in 2009 and 2017 and can't walk as I used to, carrying my cameras, lenses and supports, it is, nonetheless, pure inspiration and I continue to dream of getting back out again making the best DC images of my life.
Oh, and one more thing, check out http://whocaresaboutdc.com
Since I'm not making images as I used to, I'm not making a documentary film about the city I've adopted as my home and its place as what many of my friends refer to as the Last Plantation in the United States of America. It's a work-in-process that I expect to complete and have in distribution before the 2020 election.

I’ve never had a problem using a tripod at the FDR Memorial.
Oh, and I’ll keeo an eye out for that documentary you’re not making. 😜🤪

Thanks for taking notice. Are you a DC area resident or just a supporter of our democracy?

We stayed at LaFont(sp) Plaza. Very convenient to the mall(1 block). There is a subway stop right under the hotel too. Great for mall access.

Make that L’Enfant Plaza.

I was there last April, I would have liked to have had a tripod.

If you stand near the “V” of the Vietnam Memorial and look towards the Washington Memorial this makes a great shoot at dusk of both Memorials. Enjoy and can’t wait to see your shots.📷

Just start at the mall and you will have many opportunities to photograph many of the monuments. I would also recommend Washington Photo Safari. E David Lauria leads a safari of the monuments at night. All good suggestions here.

Only a 5 minute walk between Korean and Vietnam memorials, not overly strenuous.

Since most of the monuments require a bit of hoofing to get between them I would go online and check out the bike share programs in DC. They are numerous. I usually go for the ones you locate on your phone and pay by 30 minute ride. Usually a dollar or less. That way you do not have to find a docking station and you can park them where you want and they will usually be there when you need it to go to the next site. You may think you want the shot, yet when you arrive the set up might not be what you want. Time to move to the next. Also try to time it for a full moon visit. Lots of great spots, not all on the mall. All 3 taken the same evening. Would not of been possible without a bicycle.
