Canon 80D vs 70D (both refurbs)

In another post today several recommended the Canon 80D refurb bundle on Canon's refurb site for $699 and includes two lenses. I'm trying to understand why they have this bundle so inexpensive and yet on the same site the 70D body only is $959 and with an 18-55mm lens $1079. Why is the 70D more expensive than the 80D? I have a mint 70D and thought I should consider the 80D bundle at $699 but now I'm not so sure.

When they have a lot of stock they push it with specials. As to the lenses they often have 2 or 3 versions of the same focal length at different prices.

Either way the 80D is much advanced over the 70D. But the 70D would make a great backup or second body to an 80D.

The 80D bundle at $699 is a sale price. Normally it's something like $1399.
For that price, with the 2 lenses, if you are serious about upgrading, you can't go wrong.
I had a 70D at one time. Good camera, but, from reviews I have read the 80D is even better. Check the specs, read the reviews, then decide if you want to spend the money would be my suggestion.
Interestingly, both the 70D and 80D bodies, at normal price, cost the same at Canon refurb sales.

I have both and the 80D is head and shoulders above the 70D. I would go with the 80D package, as the lenses are interchangeable.

I'm guessing here, the 90D is getting ready to come out soon. When it hits the market, it will make the most recent model, (80D) unwanted/obsolete to photographers that want/need the new model and if they have a lot of stock of the 80D, they want to unload the 80D before the 90D comes out.

Pricing is a mystery. Look at the specs and decide which one is best for you, considering the price. The 80D sounds like the better deal.

The 80D sounds like a better package and don't forget that the 90D is releasing soon and the prices for the 80D may plummet even farther so take your best shot or wait a little longer and pick the better package then. Good Luck.

You nailed it Robert. For those interested in the 80D, buy it now. That sale has been on for a while now and guaranteed, once that runs out the chances are unlikely of the same sale returning. The list is too long comparing the two together. The 80D trumps the 70D in all areas.

Well, let's see.... compared to 70D the 80D has:
1. 20% higher resolution (24MP vs 20MP)
2. 1.5 stop greater dynamic range, higher color bit depth (according to DXO)
3. Higher settable and usable ISO (according to DXO).
4. 100% viewfinder (vs 98% in 70D).
5. 45-point AF system (vs 19-point).
6. f/8 capable AF system (vs f/5.6 limited).
7. -3EV capable AF (vs -0.5EV or -1EV, depending upon who you believe).
8. Face detection in Live View/video.
... and more. See: https://cameradecision.com/compare/Canon-EOS-70D-vs-Canon-EOS-80D

Note: While helpful and useful, I don't believe everything on that comparison website. For example, I'm pretty sure both 80D & 70D have the same shutter durability rating. It may be 150K, but at least 100K. Another example where I know that site is wrong is it states 80D is "f/8 capable" at only the center AF point. In fact 80D has f/8 capability at up to 27 of it's 45 AF points, depending upon the lens & teleconverter being used. "f/8 capability" simply means more lens/teleconverter combos are able to autofocus on the camera. For example, the Canon EF 100-400mm can AF with a 1.4X on the 80D, but not on a 70D. The 70D is "f/5.6 limited". Generally speaking, "f/8 capability" goes hand-in-hand with lower light focusing capabilities, which the 80D also offers... It's able to autofocus to -3EV, which is approx. "moonlight". That's at least two stops lower light than the 70D... maybe 2.5 stops (the specs for the 70D's AF system differ, depending upon where you look).

Canon USA apparently has a LOT of 80D w/18-55 & 55-250 on hand... So they are blowing them out at bargain prices, before the 90D hits the shelves.

If you don't need the lenses, already have something similar in your kit, you could turn around and sell them. I bet you could get at least $200 or $300 for those lenses... maybe more. That would bring your net cost for the camera down to $500 or $400 and that's truly a bargain for an 80D. (EF-S 18-55mm STM refurb sells for $200, EF-S 55-250mm STM refurb sells for $240. New those lenses sell for $249 and $299, respectively.)

That real value with the 80D. I have found that Canon refurbished product pricing varies with supply and demand, market ploy and such. I have used them for about ten years.

"I have a mint 70D and thought I should consider the 80D bundle at $699 but now I'm not so sure." My quest would be why are you looking at another body? What isn't the mint 70 not doing? I have a 60D, 6D that I am cleaning as I am look a your dilemma. I did add a Sony apsc for weight/ portability and have several Rebels but many family member that shoot. I have found for me I can't buy fun, picture quality, status or anything attached with my passion.

I just need to stand and shoot! Thanks for letting me share my thoughts. I saved a bunch of money perhaps you can also.
