I bought this camera about a week ago.....first time using a Pansonic so it took a bit of getting used to. I found the low aperature setting to be amazing for close shots; however, I absolutely do not like the external controls. They are too small and poorly marked... in particular, the silver on silver labelling on the 4 way controller which makes it very difficult to read.
It is disappointing as this camera has some great features but it annoys me enough that I will be returning it and resuming my search.
Hi Janet, I just joined this forum today and read your post. What made you buy a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7?

A good salesman perhaps ....... seriously I was looking to update my Canon SX 100. I enjoy doing macro shots but am not at the point of going to a full DSLR or changing lenses.
I also wanted one that was still relatively compact.
When I saw the featured aperture of this brand new model I decided to give it a try.
I bought a Canon S95 for Christmas and i'm enjoying it very much. I'm also not ready for DSLR, though I do want one but I think I'm still not ready to the big leagues.
Hope you post some of your macro pictures.
Have you looked at the Canon SX40? It does a very good job of most everything! With the addition of the Raynox DCR150 you will have the ability to take very good macros!
Just saw that today there is a "Daily Deal" on eBay for the SX40 at 299 and our local Walmart just dropped the price to 339
I have the LX5 and shoot with it over the Nikon D7000 on many an occasion. It is a spectacular camera with the vario summicron Leica lens and in a P&S camera it just doesn't get any better. Give it a little time and you will find that the buttons will get comfortable and you will automatically know them all. With every camera there is a learning curve. I have had many Canon P&S cameras and IMHO none of them can compare.
At any rate, Good Luck !!

The OP stated she wants a compact camera.... the SX40 is not, though it is a good camera.

I have to agree. I, too, have the DMC-LX5 and love it with it's f2.0 lens for low light and takes fantastic pics also in natural light, inside or out.

Thanks for all the comments. Here are a couple of samples of the macro images that I took at 1.8 aperature.

You will never find another P&S camera with better optics as the Panasonic's Leitz-Leica lenses.

Sorry, imo those aren't good examples of what this camera is capable of. Also, you have me confused as you mention them taken at 1.8 when, in fact, the camera's best maximum aperture is f2.0. We are talking about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, right?

LX7. ;) But i agree with the above wise comment about taking the time to learn ALL the camera is capable of. With new generation cameras, it requires more than a trace of patience, at least for me. Btw, i rather like the muted look of your photos, but if you want really sharp, realistic pics, that LX7 is capable of WAY better images. That's an excellent pocketable camera!

Janet: I have a Lumix, which I chose for the Leica lens, and I love it. I agree with you on some of the controls, however, give yourself time to get used to it. I have gotten some great shots with this pocket camera.
Hi Janet - I have a Panasonic DMC-TZ5 which goes everywhere with me. I hope you hang in there with your LX7 as I'm sure you'll love it once you give it more time. I've attached a couple of close ups I took with my TZ5 which, I believe, has the same lens as yours.
