I am part of a group rebuilding a PBY5A Catalina that will eventually go on static display at the old Rathmines Catalina base. At our recent fund raising event we had two of these grand old ladies grace our skies. These aircraft are owned and maintained by the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society. HARS also owns one of six Catalina's still flying, world wide.

Nice photos that bring back memories. The DC-3 was the first aircraft I ever flew in(on my way to Boot Camp). In 1972 I flew in the only Turboprop version of a Navy C-47.

Wonderfull memories .., in the 1950,s .., I rode in an ARAMCO DC-3 from Dhahran to Riyhad Saudi Arabia ...the pilot flew low and actually followed the huge oil pipeline that ran all the way to Riyhad.., what fun as a kid to be riding with my Dad who worked for ARAMCO ..

Very nice. The DC-3 was a masterpiece of engineering - sometimes called "the volkswagen of the aircraft industry". They could be quickly fixed or patched up and returned to service. I flew in an old beat-up DC-3 in Nicaragua decades ago - the labeling inside was in French and Vietnamese! That plane had seen a lot of service!

I remember these as the "Spooky" gun ships in Vietnam. Used to have a few photos of these doing pylon turns with the mini guns blazing (every seventh round was a tracer) so a long exposure would show a cone of fire. 4 mini's shooting 6000 rounds per minute.

Me too, Joel. American Airlines DC-3 from Tulsa, OK in August 1963 to Dallas where we transferred to another airlines' DC-6 or 7, I think, then on to Shreveport, LA, then by bus to Ft. Polk. I only remember the DC-3 since it was my first flight. There were only about 7 of us on the plane and it was a great flight. The stewardess (that's what they were called back then) was young and cute and accepted our lame attempts at flirting graciously. The pilots left the cockpit door open and anyone who wanted to got to go up and look around. Part of our group went on a 707 to Dallas, but that flight was apparently was overbooked and since we were leftovers, we got the oldie. Very glad for the experience.

Sure does bring back some memories. Last time I rode in a DC-3 was in 1967, from Dallas Love Field to the airfield at Ft. Polk, La, for army basic training. I also had the privilege of riding in a PBY when I was a teenager, in SE Alaska. Thanks for sharing those.

I joined the Air Force in 1953, after tech school, I was assigned to a Fight Check Sq, where we would fly missions to check GCA at all bases in Korea, I was a crew chief on this C-47 and got to fly with it all over Korea and once a month take a trip to Japan to our HQ Sq, had over 350 hours of flight time in the Gooney Bird(the nickname it was called). Really a good bird, only had one scare on one flight going to Japan, when we lost one engine and the pilot said all crew member put on your parachutes as we had only one engine left, but we made it safely to Miho, Japan, where we changed engines and were on our way to Tachikaya Japan, spent 1 year in Korea.

The evergreen aviation museum has the second oldest DC-3 in existence. Built in 1936 and flew for United as the Mainliner Reno from 1937 to 1953. Great aircraft.
