I have had several card readers an d have had no problems with them, the computers or damage to the cards themselves. Don't think I have spent more than $15.00 for any of my readers.

This is always a subject of controversy, but two reasons are faster download and less chance of mechanically damaging the camera’s USB port by repeated insertions. A minor point is that it doesn’t discharge the camera’s battery (requiring more often recharge cycles). Whether any of those reasons are important is a matter of personal preference. The other side of that argument is that if you don’t ever remove a CF card (if your camera uses one), there’s no chance of bending a pin by careless insertions (no insertion issue with SDs).

Interesting. I shoot RAW. Usually 30-40 on a card or thereabouts. Time doesnt matter too much to me I must admit, but it doesnt seem to take that long.

Well, to each their own. I personally never use the camera as a card reader. I use the usb port only when I need tethering, either to a CamRanger or directly to a laptop and am always careful plugging into the port. Otherwise, I download via a dedicated card reader.

I use multiple cards (CF and SD) in my cameras and may have used multiple cameras and cards during a session or day of shooting. At times, especially on vacation, I will have changed cards multiple times and would never have the chance to download to a PC. I do download backup copies to portable HDs via RavPower and/or WD My Passport Pro wireless systems regardless of the situation.

Anything you can do to shorten your time behind the computer, you should, IMHO

I have never had a failure of a card reader, but if you want to play it safe, just buy a Brand Name, like LEXAR, SANDISK, PNY, BELKIN, etc. Also, DO NOT TRUST AMAZON'S REVIEWS! They are often misplaced, out of date, or Both! I buy my Photo Gear from B&H, Adorama, Hunts and Similar Camera Shops. If you pay into the Free Shipping Deal at Amazon, just be sure you receive what you intended to buy, and that it is in a Sealed Package. You can trust Amazon with simple Photographic items, but if anything involves a rebate, I would go to an actual Camera Shop. I have NEVER, EVER, Had any problems with B&H Photo & Video

I have done tests. Actually the cord is a lot slower for large numbers of high resolution images.

The cord is ok for a few images or for images scattered around.

I recently downloaded the images from my Alaska cruise using the camera and cable and for 990 images it took approx. ten minutes to download.

Was this slow or fast, it depends on what you consider slow or fast. Could I have downloaded them using the card reader I have any quicker, possibly, but the the number of images I had I believe it would have taken just as long.

When I get ready to format my card I will probably do another download to another drive just to ensure that I have the images. By the way all the images were on a 32GB CF card and I shoot RAW and JPEG. I know some one is going to ask why but that is my preferred method of shooting.

Years ago, a "company" compared the reliability of HP and TI programmable calculators.
They found that HP "company" calculators were more reliable than equivalent "company" TI models.
They also found that HP and TI "personally-owned" calculators were equally reliable.
Seems like a lot of it was how people took care them.

Have several of these; never had a problem (though only handles SD, not CF, cards). I prefer the white; easier to find. Pink for my better half so we don't argue. Cap keeps crud out while in my computer bag.

At home, plugs into an Orico USB3 hub that is kept attached to desktop.

For ease of attaching to notebook, I use a short USB3 extension cable from Monoprice (also have a number of these cables attached to the notebook's docking station).

After a day's shooting, simply take the SD card and battery out of the camera. SD card goes in the reader, battery in the charger.

You are speculating. If you want the real answer do some comparative tests and write down the results and post them here.

I gave away all my old card readers (mostly 2.0 USB). I replaced them with a Lexar 3.0 and Delkin 3.0 readers. Both have performed flawlessly and are always connected to one of my PCs.

I have used $1 card readers fro eBay for years and have never had a problem. The card readers will not cause any problems with your computer, so spend as much as you think is worthwhile.

This may be a silly comment, question, but why do you use card readers?
I dont own one, never have. I just use the USB cables that came with the cameras (D7100 & Lumix LX100) and just download my pics directly from the camera, using the download software in Elements.
Previous to that the same method worked with my D300 without any problems.
To get them on to the iPad I then just sync it with the laptop.
I never have to handle my cards once they are in the camera and have never had a problem.
This may be a silly comment, question, but why do ... (show quote)

Then you have been very lucky so far, if you have any glitch happening on your computer, while your camera is connected, you have a very good chance it will be damaged beyond repair! Never connect your camera to a computer for that!

I am sorry but that is a ridiculous and incorrect statement.

Yes it "could" happen that a glitch scrambles some images but the chance of the computer failing and damaging the camera is very very small. Maybe if the computer was struck by lighting wile connected to the camera it would cause damage.

Or if you are downloading in the house, the ceiling could fall in and your camera could be crushed, so download outdoors.

I see time after time folks on this forum, more than on any other forum, that are constantly looking for problems, like little kids afraid of the monster under the bed.

Good point!! Or an earthquake or tornado could strike the house, or maybe an airplane or truck could crash into the house, so there are even more reasons to only download outdoors. Never download inside the house.

On UHH you get:
(1) Expert advice
(2) Strong conflicting opinions
(3) Completely wrong answers

It is up to the reader to sort them out.
