Have you considered the latest AF-P 70-300 4.5-5.6. That is the FX version and has very good ratings by about everyone. I use it on a D500 and a Z7 with great results. It is a bargain at $600.

I share your observation. This is a bargain and consistent.

A well received lens, but it does not address the wide end typically used for travel.
The lens I use for APS-C is a Fuji 18-55 2.8~4.
55 is plenty long for what I shoot.
For Nikon, I would look hard at the 16-80 or 16-85, as fetzler suggested earlier.

Hello everyone, I'm FOB to this forum, you can call me Los, I'm planning a trip in the near future, so I'm contemplating a new Nikon 18 300 mm f/3.5 - 5.6 DX I'm using a D7200, don't want to be carrying multiple lenses. Have read about other lenses, but for some reason I keep getting back to this one, I know the price is a bit high. Would this be the right lens over other choices?

You do not say where your traveling, so it is a little hard to give advise. If this is a wildlife trip, having the 300 would be helpful. If this is more casual traveling, the extra weight of the lens may be a downside since you may not need the length between 200 and 300. In either case, you may want to throw a wide angle zoom (something in the 10-20 range) into your bag. All travel trips can use a wide angle for landscape or architectural shots.

I have and use this lens with my D 500. For all intents and purposes, it is the only lens I travel with. There is also another model which is a bit slower, but lighter, but I’d go with this model. It is a bit heavy which is the only issue, IMHO.

Before I moved to FF, I shot with a Nikon D300S and traveled with a Sigma 18-250. Loved the combo. Just one man's opinion!

Just joined, also just got Tamron 18-400 af lense for d5300. Great combo for travel to Boston and Marthas Vineyard. Worked well from close shots of Freedom trail markers in sidewalks to distant lighthouses from ferry. Took interesting shots of Cormorants swimming underwater. Matched rig to Carry Speed pro mark shoulder strap—really easy to carry all day and take rapid shots. Heading to Africa for safari in October, aiming for safe “close-up” shots of big 5.

I second this recommendation of the Tamron 18-400. I used that lens in my Nikon d7100 for a couple of years and several trips and found it totally adequate. The only thing I added was a Nikon 50mm 1.4 for low light situations. This worked well and the 50mm is very light and small so no problem carrying it around.

The advantage of the 18-400 is that it's relatively light and easy to use and it gives you a range useful in most situations. (I would add that I favor telephoto shots so like the longer reach of the 18-400 and I got very good pictures from the long end of it.)

Seems like a good lens to me. Having the right focal length is handy so that you don't have to change lenses in the middle of your photos. I would just read up on other attributes of that lens to see if there are any other problems like distortion, sharpness, focus issues, etc. If it doesn't get a lot of bad reviews, then I'd go for it.

For slightly less, you could get the Tamron 18-400mm lens.

Welcome to the UHH forum. May I ask what lens have you been using prior to this trip? You say you have other lenses. Are they not suitable for a trip you are taking. Surely they were OK in the California area. I live in Southern California and don't have an 18-300 lens for my Nikon but have never needed one either. I am not trying to be negative but am curious what you already use to take the place of the lens you want to buy.

I am confused by Mac who said - "Welcome to UHH.
I believe the AF-S Nikkor DX 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G lens has been discontinued and replaced by
the AF-S Nikkor DX 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G."

Replaced by the same lens?

That lens is one heavy sucker and may be a challenge to carry around all day. My favorite travel lens for the D7200 is the Nikon 18-200 VRII lens. You should be able to get it off ebay mint in the box for a good price. Make sure you get the VRII lens and not the VR lens.
I carry that lens on my D7100 and it's a great all-around lens. I've heard some good things about the 18-300, but have never tried one.

No. The original one had an f/3.5-5.6 max. aperture. The newer one is f/3.5-6.3

While you’re at it, check out the Tamron 18-400. Less $$$ and lighter yet still good quality.

I second the TAMRON 18-400 suggestion. I have one and use it frequently when travelling. Acceptable sharpness and good quality build.
