I have a canon t6i and only have the lens that came with it.
I’m shooting more portraits and family shoots now. Any lens recommendations?

The EF-S 18-135 is a very sharp and good all around lens for a crop frame camera.

85mm 1.8 is a good lens for those purposes.

What has your research recommended? What is the lens that came with this thing.

On an APC camera (T6i) your best bet is the EF 50mm f/1.8.

Take a real good look at the results you are getting. Are they sharp? How is the exposure? Do others like the images you are capturing? If yes to all of these a new lens will not improve your shooting.
If the answer is no, then you need to look at your technique and/or take a photo course.

A lens with a larger aperture would allow perhaps greater bokeh and shallower DOF for your portraits. I would consider the 50 or 85mm primes at f/1.8 or f/1.4 depending on the money you might spend. Personally I love the 85mm f/1.8 as it is very sharp, fast focusing and relatively inexpensive. But I use it on FF and 1.3 crop body cameras.

I have a 50mm f 1.8 for my t2i. It cost me $125 from Canon Refurb, great lens for closeups and portraits - sharp focus.

I also have the Canon T6i. Have a Canon EF-S 10-18 MM for wide angle, a Sigma 18-250 macro that I keep on the camera most all the time, and a and Tamron EF 60 mm f:2 macro for portraits.I find these combinations cover most all of my photograph needs.

Also have a Panasonic DC-ZS70 with a Leica lens that I use for travel.

Yes, the 50mm f1.8 lens should serve you well...and I am not a Canon shooter.

Ditto on the 18-135mm.
