See??? It is portable! Very good stack (of course!)
I have a question, which is basically the question in my thread but I want to ask it here as well to get your opinion. When you program the tube, it suggests a focus step size for your aperture and lens (a number like '11', or '13') But I have been finding that these are extremely small step sizes, so it takes a ton of frames to focus thru a subject. So do you manually change that step size to make it so you can do this in 20 frames? Like instead of '11', or '13' you override it and enter '110' or '130'.

I could have sworn that I just read this: "20 shots sitting in my golf cart braced against the 2x2 metal tube that holds the roof up." Naw, that couldn't be right. Mike

Very nicely done Tom but that goes without saying.

Mark, I tried to program it, but as you said the step size was always too small. It works without programing, so that is the way I use it. I set my aperture for the light. I think it was f/9 for the flower.

Some info as to where to buy Helicon FB Tube, and a picture of it in action, if you get a chance, please. Bill

Way cool..! Happy to see others enjoying focus stacking adventures and I'm eager to see great things from you in the field with all the lovely critters that you have in Texas.

Here is a video showing it being used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3Ykoaowuvc
In the newer tubes, the program is entered into a tube by a direct cable line from a cell phone to the tube, rather than relying on using a transmitter as shown in the video. Once a programmed is entered, the tube holds onto it as long as the camera is left on.

A couple of things, Mark, that aren't clear from the video.
1.) You don't have to set the tube for each f stop. From the Helicon FB tube forum:
2.) "Focus steps of the tube is the value proportional to rotation of the focus ring of the lens, not to the linear movement of focus in mm, it’s in arbitrary units. When you change the aperture, the width of the DoF area changes. The size of the step is being recalculated in the app automatically when you select a different aperture."
3.) Also, once programmed you are good to go indefinitely and shutting the camera off doesn't change anything.

I'm very happy to have located these Helicon HB Tube postings. I have long seen this sort of "all terrain" system as a desirable alternative to the sophisticated, but barely portable, and painfully expensive Cognisys set-up. Perhaps I've looked in the wrong places but so far, I've seen very few informative Helicon HB Tube reviews, discussions, trip reports, sample images etc. and therefore I've hesitated to make an investment. Some HB Tube experience from fellow Hogs with advice and opinions on use, reliability and support would not only be appreciated but might comprise what it takes for me to justify an order --which, actually, is something I'd really like to do.

Mike, Mark, Tom, et al Helicon HB Tube owners/field users -
1.) Please consider cooperatively authoring a post for Frequently Asked Questions and Answers concerning use and settings for Helicon HB Tube for macro.

2.) Submit example photos (both good & bad), to illustrate points within the article.

3.) Submit article to me, and I will do a bit of compiling & editing, then post to FAQ&A thread.

Wow! What a gift. My Ugly Hedgehog membership has benefited me in many ways but this offer is well beyond what I would have expected. Sincere thanks to all concerned for your efforts.
