When I was a kid in Chicagoland, we had these all over the place every summer. We called them "banana spiders", but they are more actually "garden spiders". You can hold them by the upper body and pull the web out of the abdomen. Never got bit by one, and don't know of anyone that ever did either. Safe and a boon to gardeners who want the bugs out of the garden.

Nice shots of interesting webs. I bet they eat a lot of insects.

Very nice!

FYI: some biologists think that the big wavy line through the nest prevents bats from flying through the nest at night - the bats might otherwise "see" a struggling insect as if it were flying, and the bats would swoop down to grab it - and end up destroying the web. With this heavy strip of web, it looks to the bat like a stick, so the bat will avoid it.

Interesting. I would not have given that any thought. Makes sense though.

A thanks to all who have respond to my Writing (argue aurantia) Spider post. It was definitely interesting photographing them. From what I read, their bite is comparable to an ant bite or bee sting. Don't think I will go nextdoor to find out!!!!!

Beautiful shots of what we call Giant Orbs or Banana Spiders as kids here in Florida...looks intimidating but harmless.

My next door neighbor came over last evening and said I needed to grab my camera. He led me next door to one of his bushes. There were two large Writing Spiders there. Needless to say, the shooting started. Attached are four photos of the spiders. As the light breeze was gently moving the webs, the focusing is not perfect. Glad these are in my neighbor's yard.

my favorite of these is shot no. 1...we have these spiders in Georgia too although I haven't seen one
around our yard in a while.

They are in fact harmless. My Grand-kids used to catch moths and toss them into the web and watch the spider pounce on them.

Outstanding photos! Orb Weaver spiders are essentially harmless to humans, but their webs can be irritating if one walks through one. They are a benefit to anyone's garden as they eat a lot of bugs.

Great shots, not something I know anything about but they look like something I would rather avoid!
