I hike with a group and can’t stop and take the time to pull out, compose shots, and repack my Olympus OM-D E-M10. It’s not fair to the other hikers.
So I would like to get a capable, very compact, camera for hikes. My cellphone just isn’t good enough to get the quality of pictures I’m looking for.
I’ve done my research, and I’m leaning towards a Canon Powershot Elph 360 HS. I like the frame to frame speed, and 12x optical zoom. Any concerns about the choice, or other alternatives in a similar price range ~$200?
Two points, won’t go bigger, not up for arguments about taking the Olympus, I’ll do that when I’m not with the group.
Good choice, you might also look at the Canon Powershot Elph 340H, I have been quite satisfied with mine.
If you would prefer to stay with Olympus the TG-6 is a great camera. Doesn't have the zoom you mentioned but that's the only thing I don't like about it. It's considerably more than the ~200$, but armoured, water proof, dust proof etc. And great macro mode among other things.
Thanks, I think the 360 HS is the successor model.
I’m retired, so “considerably more” is impractical. Also, I’m looking for the zoom to get shots I can’t get near physically. The macro mode would have been nice for wildflowers though.

Armored & waterproof are definite plus plus points when going outdoors.

True, but I rarely drop equipment, and am unwilling to sacrifice the zoom.

Go to Canon's refurbished site and buy the 360 for $169.99, one year warranty included.

You might be hard pressed with your budget.
My recommendation has always been for the Sony HX99, has a 24-750 mm Zeiss lens, pop up viewfinder, and shoots RAW plus a 6 stop HDR, did I mention auto fill flash.
Did I mention you can easily get 20X30 prints from this guy.

Thanks. Beautiful shots, and RAW is nice. Not budget compatible though.
Firstly, thanks for all the responses, each helpful in their own way. It’s amazing how the big camera sites narrow your view of what’s available, and how the advanced searches, for all their sophistication, manage to miss the point. I’ve decided to up my budget, slightly, go for a slightly larger camera than I had planned, and take advantage of Canon’s refurbished units with the Powershot SX 720. I’ve used my wife’s older ELPH, so I’m familiar with the Canon menus. I also have a soft spot for Canon, as my first SLR about 40 years ago was an AE-1. I’m excited about the frame rate and 40x optical zoom in such a compact package. I will probably take it to South America in December, so there may be penguins in future postings! Thanks everyone.
On a Hike, Expatty, I would think you would want more reach, from the only camera you will have with you, than just 12x?? Think about it.

Agree, going with the SX 720, Canon refurb, 40X zoom.
