FYI: some biologists think that the big wavy line through the nest prevents bats from flying through the nest at night - the bats might otherwise "see" a struggling insect as if it were flying, and the bats would swoop down to grab it - and end up destroying the web. With this heavy strip of web, it looks to the bat like a stick, so the bat will avoid it.
Interesting. I would not have given that any thought. Makes sense though.
