I would recommend the Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E EDIF VR Lens about $550 This is a much higher quality lens. This will give you greater reach and higher quality,

I buy used and refurbished, but allways from very well known outfits--B&H = Adorama- Cameta or KEH. The gear from all of them looked new and have worked flawless ly. Each has very good return policies if you want to return anything.

In addition to B&H, Adorama and MPB I have found KEH to be a good place to buy used equipment from. There ratings of like new, excellent, Very Good, etc. are accurate and reflected in the price. That also have good guarantee and return policies.

I only buy used lens following the good advice you have been given here.
You might check to see if your camera needs a lens with a focus motor. The older lens do not have them and your wildlife will not wait around for your to manually focus.

Nothing wrong with used lenses in good condition. I will share a secret with you ALL of my lenses were bought used. Never an issue with them. I just ordered a Nikon 24-85 G, VR and AF-S from MPB and I get a 6 moths warranty with it.
If you need reach may I recommend the excellent Nikon 70-300 VR, I have the old version and I am very happy with it. Figure around $300 for a used one in excellent condition.

As Bob suggested, you can rent and if happy with a particular lens then you can buy it.

I would recommend used lenses but only from the usual companies, B&H/Adorama/Cameta.
I bought a lens from each of these suppliers and found that their rating was very accurate if not lower than expected.
In all three cases the lenses all looked like they were brand new instead of used.

B&H , Adorama are safest to buy used gear. I bought some lenses out of pawn shops. It’s not easy to pick always the good gear. Keep in mind some gear is built to last and some isn’t.

I have a Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm lens. I have an event where I will be shooting groups against a back drop and also candid shots. I was thinking of purchasing a telephoto lens Nikon 55-200 f/4-5.6 G ED VR. New are in the $346.00 range while used are as low as $99.00. Are used lens okay? Other than this event I shoot as a hobby landscapes, flora and birds etc. I’ve felt I’ve needed a telephoto lens.
Thanks for any input!

I have had the following Nikon bodies: D70s, D300, D300s, D700 and now shoot with a (pre-owned) D810. I have a arsenal of lenses, including primes and zooms and most has been bought used. Local dealers, Craigslist, B&H, Adorama and KEH. The caveat is that all of my glass is professional grade. My 3 zoom lenses are all fixed f/2.8 aperture and the primes are f/2.8 or faster. I would never consider buying a used consumer grade lens. Too much plastic and less build quality. The pro glass is made to last and professionals trade up when something new comes along leaving the previous versions to be picked up by photographers like me. One final point is that I never recommend the D3xxx or D5xxx series bodies. They are not compatible with older and very serviceable Nikkor MF and AF lenses. My first 300mm prime was a f/4.5 Nikkor that was made in 1982 and it performed beautifully on my D700 in manual and aperture priority. I paid $225 at KEH, used it for 18 months and sold it locally for $250.

For the event you describe, I'm not sure why you would need a longer zoom. Unless you intend to zoom in on specific people in the group, maybe?

As for purchasing used lenses, I've done it many times and have always been satisfied. I purchased one from a member here. Some have been from stores I trusted like a local store or B&H, etc. I've used KEH some. I have never purchased via e-bay and I don't think I would.

I have bought several lenses from KEH. All but a few have been like new and all were in their advertised condition or better. The ones I did not like I returned with no hassle whatsoever. They offer a 180 warranty also. I have also purchased a couple of used lenses and cameras from Adorama with no issues. My advice is to check the reputable dealers mentioned in this thread first and to go to Ebay if necessary. A tip about Ebay. I look for a seller with multiple transactions and 100% feedback, nothing less. So far so good.

Happy shopping

Used lenses are fine, if you buy good stuff from reputable dealers. Most of my lenses are used. Adorama, B&H Photo-Video, and MPB, have been good for me. Check the ratings the sites offer. Adorama has a rating system, so you can get anything from almost new to only good for parts items. MPB describes whether there is dust inside the lens to what degree of brassing, etc, the lens has. Some people take good care of their gear, and then sell it to get money to buy new items. Other people treat their gear like garbage, and damage it before selling it. Pay attention to descriptions, but realize that a used item is sold 'As Is', and will generally have no warranty. Some sellers of used gear will offer their own, in store, warranty; but most won't. I got a used 28-80mm Nikon f/3.3-5.6G lens for $47.00. It is in almost new condition. It came in the original box. I suspect that it has just sat in a warehouse, without ever having been purchased, or put on a camera.....or that it was put on a camera as in in store demonstrator, and otherwise put in the store's store room. It is extremely sharp. The one time I got ripped off, by a used lens purchase, I bought it from Ebay. It was damaged, and totally unlike the description of it on Ebay. I no longer buy from Ebay. I have bought several used items from Adorama, B&H, and MPB, and never had any problems, or regrets. Consider older Nikon lenses designed for their film cameras. My 28-80mm lens was one such. It was a later G type sold as a kit lens with the cheaper film cameras such as the N55, shortly before everything camera wise went digital. I also have some still older lenses. Nikon Ai, Ai-S, and D, lenses should work on your camera, and will usually be available used, and be affordable in most cases. Check Ken Rockwell. He has a lens-camera compatibility chart on his site.
