Everyone thinks that Coney Island is all about the boardwalk, beach, amusements, people, and Nathan's. And everyone is basically right. Then, on a recent trip with friends, I walked a little further down the boardwalk than usual. And I found the former Child's Restaurant building (1923)-landmarked in 2003; and renovated and restored in 2016 as Ford Amphitheater. Child's was the largest restaurant chain in the early 20th century (107 locations in 29 cities), serving fair priced meals to the inner city working people. This building features some of the first polychrome terracotta reliefs in bright colors and thematic of the environment. I hope you enjoy this restrospective.

Is this the building in the movie "Once Upon a Time in America"??? Looks like where Noodles to his girlfriend to dinner.......and raped her on the way home.
This is a great post! The photos are amazing. Fun place.
It has brought back memories of riding the Cyclone. I look at videos of it now and wonder how my parents ever let me ride that thing!

Beautiful Series of Historical images, I hate when they "Tear-down", a building, especially when memories are attached.
Thanks Sky, NM, Mike, Katy, Silver. Don't think so Dancers.
Interesting photos and narrative.
great set - thanks for the tour. Its a shame they don't build them like that anymore.

A fun discovery for sure...aren't you glad you took that walk. Enjoyed the wonderful shots.
Very Nice. And the artwork is so crisp. Just like your shots.
Refreshing to see that this building was saved and seemingly restored to its once great appearance! Not the image of Coney island that most of us perceive!
