Taking the gondola from South Lake Tahoe to the top of Heavenly Ski Resort is awesome in the summer. (Of course, nothing compares to taking photos while skiing at Heavenly!) There are nice hiking trails and incredible views. Enjoy!

Traveling there soon. Any help on the areas or other information would be greatly appreciated?

I like Tahoe but if you're in the area of the Northern Sierras I'd suggest travelling south to Mono Lake (1.5 hr drive down US 395. Spectacular, especially in the morning sun with light bathed up against the eastern Sierras. If there is no wind the optics off the lake are stunning.

Visited Reno in 2000, stayed in Tahoe. The view coming down from the mountain pass when you first see Lake Tahoe was spectacular as the clouds were below us, hovering over the lake. The drive around Tahoe is about 80 miles, but there's lots of beautiful photo sites. Emerald Bay has emerald green water near the shore. There's a sunset dinner cruise at night in an old paddle wheel riverboat type craft. That was well worth it, good food and drink and live entertainment. Anywhere along the state line to incline village you can get some beautiful shots of the lake with the mountains in the background. I'd say Lake Tahoe was the prettiest place I've been in the US, and I have been through about 40 of the states and both coasts.

The Boat Ride opportunities have expanded somewhat. There are boats from King's Beach on the Northwestern shore (California side) Zephyr Cove, South Eastern side in Nevada, and at South Lake Tahoe Ca/Nv where Hornblower has a few yachts. And there are also a few sailing yachts for cocktail and dinner cruises. Mr. Google is your friend here.

Photo Ops are boundless. There are guides, but I don't have titles for you. Much of the CA side is privately owned and also forested. Similarly the Nevada side hs limited Public access. Incline Village on the North end has several beaches and parks, including Sand Harbor which has Shakespeare and Concerts--check 'em out. Also great views of the entire lake.

Have a great trip,
C

The Donner Party camp site.

Those sites are in Truckee CA and nearby. There is an entire museum, including a campground and lake access dedicated to the Donner Party at Donner Lake of just West of Truckee on I-80.

There's the newly opened Tahoe East Shore Trail near Incline Village and Sand Harbor. I'm planning on checking it out but I'm waiting for the schools to reopen. I want to try and avoid the myriad of tourists that visit the lake.

Tahoe East Shore Trail is a 2.6 mile point-to-point trail located near Incline Village-Crystal Bay, Nevada that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, trail running, and road biking. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
This newly formed trail was opened in the summer of 2019. The paved path is ADA accessible and features a 10-feet path overlooking Lake Tahoe. The path starts near Tunnel Creek Café in Incline Village and continues to Sand Harbor.

I'm waiting, too. It makes the shoreline extremely accessible. The kids returned today in Nevada.

In the mid-1970s I visited Lake Tahoe and Pyramid lake in Nevada (a ways north of Sparks) in summer, both with their own attractiveness, and again in winter (a ski trip) in 1980. I rented an aeroplane at South Lake Tahoe airport for a bird's eye view of the area, a great way to get interesting photos. Lake Tahoe in those days had water that was amazingly clear, but made for cold swimming. Pyramid Lake was green and warm.

The best food at the best prices was found at the casinos on the Nevada side. They also had some top level entertainment. Don't know if that's still true.

The food scene have expanded significantly on the California side and also in Incline Village. Squaw Valley, Truckee, in addition boast some great restaurants without the casino "charm."

The Washoe school district (Reno) started on the 12th but Carson schools are out until next Monday, the 19th. It sounded like most of the California schools where back on the 13th.

What is soon? Different seasons, different experiences. Summer, winter, fall, spring? Are you outdoorsy? Hike bike etc..... Are you coming during the busy summer season? (Don't, way to crowded to really enjoy most things) Weekend? Again don't. Do not have time for real answer now, need to finish clearing some trees and stain the deck. You can message me and I can give you some ideas. Here are a few views from my deck.

If flying into Reno, the planes typically land going north. Sit on the left side of the plane for a view of the lake. Once in Reno, the best introductory view is Highway 431 "Mt Rose Highway" Takes you over the highest year round open pass in the Sierra (8,911 ft). At the Summit is the Mt. Rose Meadows, worth a stop, late winter might still be wild flowers. On the way down watch for the sweeping right hand corner view point. Panoramic with interpretive sightings naming all the major mountains. Sunset and sunrise point.
Even after living here almost 50 years I recommend driving around the lake in a clockwise direction. Lake is always on your right, easier to stop. Once at the bottom of 431, traffic circle I recommend to go right (wrong way) for a very short distance. In 1.1 mile on your left you will see Lakeshore Dr. Turn left and follow it. This is Billionaires Row. The Lakefront houses on the right are the billionaires. Some rumored to have spent upwards of a quarter of a billion to construct. Across the street are the wannabe billionaires. At the end of Lakeshore you will return to Highway 28 around the lake. Once again, I would suggest turning left for a very short distance until you see the Tunnel Creek Cafe on your right. An awesomely delicious and reasonable place for Breakfast or lunch. Just beautifully remodeled. This is also home to Flume Trail Bikes. I haven't spoken with Max yet but I believe he might of expanded his rental fleet to include bikes for the newly opened "Most Beautiful Bike Path" that runs 3 miles from Incline to Sand Harbor. By all means do it. Continue along the East Shore of Lake Tahoe. All is Nevada State Park. If you can get a tour of the Thunderbird Lodge, by all means do it. https://thunderbirdtahoe.org/ Stop at Spooner Lake State Park for a 2 mile hike around the lake. When you get to Highway 50 go right and head towards South Tahoe. When you get to Cave Rock do the short hike to the top. THE VERY BEST EASY PANORAMIC VIEW. See my Trip Advisor review:
https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g45947-d527095-r481356552-Cave_Rock-Glenbrook_Lake_Tahoe_Nevada_Nevada.html
Whew, I haven't even got you 1/4 of the way around yet.
Nevada Beach in Roundhill is best beach. Best way is to drive to Kahle Dr. (traffic light) make a right and park in lot (or on street) and walk the paved 2 mile loop around Rabe Meadows with will take you through Nevada Beach. Once you make your way through South Lake (Tons of stuff to do there) Turn right at the "Y" and continue towards Tahoe City. Once you get through Camp Richardson, look for the road to Fallen Leaf Lake on the left. Turn right to the Talac Historic Site and drive down to parking and then tour (free) Pope and Baldwin estates. Once back on the highway either cross and go to Fallen Leaf Lake (narrow mostly one lane) all the way past towards Glen Ellen. The water falls and Lilly Lake are great. If you decide not to do Fallen Leaf, turn right back onto 89 and go a very short distance to the Taylor Creek Visitor Center (free) Nice forest walk and creek with Stream Profile chamber. Carry on from here to Emerald Bay. Must See. Hike down to Vikingshome and do a tour. Well worth it. Next is DL Bliss State Park. Another must see is Sugar Pine State Park and the Erhman Mansion. After you pass through Homewood /Tahoe Pines is Eagle Rock. Another spectacular short hike to a phenomenal view of the Lake. Google for trail head and parking. It is on left just after you pass over the bridge for Blackwood Creek.
The last place for a great view with a short hike is the old Stateline Fire Lookout in Crystal Bay. Well worth it. Paved road to top. Once again Google it for trailhead is in neighborhood. Once back in Crystal bay it is down the hill to the roundabout traffic circle and Highway 431 to Reno. Whew! did you get all that. This will definately take a few days to do all of this so you will have to chose what sounds good. Lots of places to eat and if you are into micro brews, South Tahoe now has at least a 1/2 a dozen. Heavenly tram is good, make sure you get off at mid station. $53. Check out TravelZoo.com for a great 2 for 1 Tram Ride at Squaw Valley. Well worth it.

Have fun
Dale
