According to Hoyle you need to get the Queen of Spades and all the Hearts. The Moon is a object in full sunlight. Sunny 16 rule applies to the moon just as a person standing in a field. This was demonstrated in the first set of moon photos with exposure examples.

Consider buying the PhotoPills app for $10. Lots of great information and tutorials for shooting Astro related photos.

I am trying to shoot the moon and have done so with my Nikon D7100 but now I have a D850. I’m using the same setting I used with the D7100 but my pictures are not turning out the same. The lens I’ve use on both is the AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G and I’m using a tripod. My question is it seams like the 7100 takes better picture of the moon. Is it because it’s a DX vs a FX?

I have a N-AF 2X TELEPLUS MC7 would it help bring the moon closer in the frame of the FX camera?
Can some one here give me a starting point as far as setting on my camera?
Here what I’m using now ISO 200 f8/f11 shutter speed 1/250 with the AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G
And is it possible to use the 2X teleplus with the D850 for shooting the moon?

I want to try and shoot the moon Friday night when it’s full.

As others have said, the likely problem is lack of sharp focus on the D850. Try using manual focus with the camera and lens on a tripod. Shutter speed needs to be at least 1/60 or faster like 1/250. Use of a teleextender will reduce image quality.

Moonlight is reflected sunlight so exposure of the moon to see details on the moon needs to mimic daylight exposure if the sky is clear. Try ISO 100, 1/100 and f 16 or f 11 if the sky is clear. Look at your histogram and use exposure compensation to fine tune the exposure. If you want a faster shutter speed, start with use ISO 200 and 1/250 and then adjust with ex comp.

With a 70-300mm lens, set DX Image size on your D 850 to increase focal length by 1.5x. Use the self timer to trigger the shutter.

When the moon is full, having some cloud details adds to the impact of the picture, but you do not want to focus on the clouds.

The interned is full of postings on how to take moon shots.

Here’s one I just took. I’m learning as I go.

As I look at your photo I remember that 300mm on an APS-C camera is barely strong enough for a really good shot. It took me much practice. Attached is a cropped shot using a Sigma 18-250mm at 250mm on a T2i. This was after several tries and a little sharpening in post process.

I have a d810 that has "image area" in the camera icon menu that I can set to dx. So if it's an fx lens then it would crop it as if it were dx. I can't imagine the 850 doesn't have this?

Using crop mode on a Nikon full frame camera is no different than cropping in post processing. The main advantages of crop mode on some FX Nikons would be smaller files and faster frame rate. Neither would be necessary or advantageous if shooting the moon.

D850 has a crop mode. It might be off in your settings. But bear in mind, it only uses about 19 mega pixels when in that mode. Zoomed to the same size as what you get in your D7100, it will be more pixelated.

No it won't.

that brings up an unrelated subject to me. crop mode simply truncates the image frame, rather than do that why not use more pixel sites to create each pixel? its all software and could be via firmware update?

I have the d7000, d810 and the same lens as you 70-300mm G and I have the 70-200mm 2.8F. Both lenses on the d7000 not a problem but the d810 shows a conflict in infinity ♾ focus or after infinity on both lenses. But it’s still possible to get it sharp.
My last half moon I shot was 1/800 f5.6 iso 2500 @300 mm hand held, with 810.
My older tokina 100mm lens on the 7000 shows unsharpness but on 810 not a problem. The 70-300 is a good lens
