Here’s one I just took. I’m learning as I go.

It seems to be out of focus. Also I can see clouds in front of the moon. You need a clear sky to make a clean image. turn off auto focus and turn on live view and zoom in and focus manually using live view. Use a tripod & remote trigger or timer so that you do not disturb the camera when you shoot.

It’s over cast here but theirs a few breaks n the clouds. I just swapped to a newer lens but it only 200mm

Do you see the slight glow around the moon? The sky is not clear, there are ice crystals or dust high up in the air. The pixel problem is more visible here. There is less pixel available to make a crisp image.

Why force the 850 to replicate 7100 result?
Crop sensors have higher pixel density and will show the best image a lens can do.

The downloadable file is smaller than the true pixel count of your camera. Check you settings.

Here are two pictures I took with the D850 one was with the AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G the other with AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm 1:2.8G ED. The 200mm looks better to me than the 300 both are cropped. I was using a app called SnapBridge and it was sending me low quality pictures to my iPad. After I hooked up my camera to my iMac the raw files looked a lot better than what I was seeing in the preview on my iPad.

What you are now seeing is the quality of the lens. The 70-300 is soft on its maximum zoom. If you limit the zoom only to 200mm in your 70-300, you will see some improvement in the image.

I have a d810 that has "image area" in the camera icon menu that I can set to dx. So if it's an fx lens then it would crop it as if it were dx. I can't imagine the 850 doesn't have this?

D850 has a crop mode. It might be off in your settings. But bear in mind, it only uses about 19 mega pixels when in that mode. Zoomed to the same size as what you get in your D7100, it will be more pixelated.

Try ISO 100, f/7.1 and 1/800. 1/250 may be too slow and you are getting movement of the moon. Tripod, mirror locked up and shutter remote release. Full moon is actually Thursday in Harrisburg, NC according to the PhotoPills app. You may want to get that app for $10...lots of good information.

I am trying to shoot the moon and have done so with my Nikon D7100 but now I have a D850. I’m using the same setting I used with the D7100 but my pictures are not turning out the same. The lens I’ve use on both is the AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G and I’m using a tripod. My question is it seams like the 7100 takes better picture of the moon. Is it because it’s a DX vs a FX?

I have a N-AF 2X TELEPLUS MC7 would it help bring the moon closer in the frame of the FX camera?
Can some one here give me a starting point as far as setting on my camera?
Here what I’m using now ISO 200 f8/f11 shutter speed 1/250 with the AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G
And is it possible to use the 2X teleplus with the D850 for shooting the moon?

I want to try and shoot the moon Friday night when it’s full.

This works, plus it has a lot of good comprehensive tips all in one video.

A starting point for shooting the moon is 1/ISO at f16. ie. If your ISO is 125, then your starting exposure is 1/125 sec. at f16. Then, check your results and either add exposure or eliminate some exposure for a good final result.

Sure, try the teleplus but remember it adds two f stops, and your camera probably doesn't autofocus that lens past f8. I'm not sure why you need such a high f stop. There's no depth of field to worry about at 1/4 million miles. I'd start at iso-100 and the lowest f stop (widest) your lens will allow (probably f5.6), live view, and adjust the shutter speed until you get nice contrast on the moon's features. If you are worried about camera shake, use the 10 second shutter delay and stand away from the camera and tripod after you press the shutter to start the 10 second countdown. There's no hurry, so try a few shots with and without the teleplus. If the lens won't autofocus with the teleplus, let the lens focus without it, then switch the lens and camera to manual focus. It should stay at the same focus spot it autofocused at. The only thing you should have to change is to lower the shutter speed to adjust for the loss of light in the teleplus. Naturally you will need to crop the pic in post processing. For the moon I like a square crop with just a little little black sky showing.

Good summary and works for me! And any lens at max MM will not be the sharpest especially with and extender. You get closer but suffer a bit in clarity meaning some post processing sharpening to try to compensate.

This was shot two days before full moon. Not much detail to show at this stage of the lunar cycle.
