Why he might have fourteen iPads is irrelevant. Why he had them IN AN INSECURE LOCATION is the question.

Cars get broken into all the time. Especially in large parking lots, and especially in big expensive cars. "Being prepared" doesn't mean pretending that bad things never happen.

I guess you missed the part about having to have certain things for different events. Not being able to run home and drop off what you don't need. And having to leave certain things in the car because you can't carry it all. Seriously does a contractor take all their tools inside every house they work on? We are talking about securing that which MUST be left in the vehicle and nobody is pretending that bad things do not happen. We are discussing ways to protect that which must be left in the car. Seriously if you have nothing constructive to offer maybe just move on to another topic.

Heres a idea depending on the size of his vehicle go down to your local walmart or farm store or even check online for a truck toolbox they come in diamond plate aluminum some have hasps others have built in locks,,,you should be able to find one reasonably close to the size you need..hint allways buy the biggest box you have room for ..in my case I use them for tools and never have enough room..same would go for camera equipment ..then you and your friend can get some foam rubber to glue to the bottom and sides, make dividers and whatnot...srry to your friend about loseing his valuables.

I was thinking the same thing but they are all kinda tall and narrow (front to back). We were envisioning something that was kinda flat like maybe 12 inches tall, a few feet deep, and as wide as the vehicle would allow. Bolt it down and cover it with carpet to match the vehicles and line it like you say. Could be pretty cool and you could still put cargo on top of it.

Underbody Toolbox (18x18x60 inches) look this up maybe you could lay it on its back so the door opens upwards

Sorry for your friend's loss, BigD. When I was contracting, I could not easily replace thousands of dollars worth of electric and pneumatic tools I always had in my van. I used a 2 X 2 X 4 foot steel job box that could be bolted down and damn near impossible to break into. Do a Google search for "job box" or "jobsite box". They come in much smaller sizes and can be found for $100 - $200, less than the cost to custom fabricate.

Yeah they have the smaller ones at Home Depot and I was looking at them. They are a bit too tall for the back of an SUV but I wonder if they could be cut down a bit so you still have the secure lid?

That's not a bad option there. Like you said just lay it down so the lid opens the same direction as the hatchback.

You might try a gun safe laying down in the back. You can get one for a hundred bucks that is pretty tough. They hold 9 rifles.

You're the one who brought up stuff that didn't need to be left in the car. If you're going to engage in risky behavior, there's not much constructive anyone can offer you.

The best protection is not to have expensive items in the car. Don't let others in the parking lot see you getting out with it, or see you swapping equipment in and out before you walk away from the car.

All it takes is someone in the ballpark, looking for someone with "higher end" equipment, and following your friend out to his car. If they know anything at all about pro cameras, they'll expect to see him at every home game, and they'll be looking for his car after he's had time to replace everything. And even if they don't have the right equipment to break in next time, it's easy to find and come back later.

What? I said he left stuff in his car that he did not need or could not carry into the stadium. This was just some random punk smashing in the window who got lucky not some crime ring following him around. Clearly you are not a pro shooter moving from event to event so I will give your ignorance a pass. As for what we carry and what we decide to leave in our cars I guess that's up to us huh? Now I have an idea, hows about we talk about what the original post was about huh?

How do you know it was "some random punk"? How do you know that your friend wasn't targeted by someone who saw his equipment?

Because he arrived late and parked off site. No one was around when he left his car. And to be quite honest I am tired of sparring with you. You have lectured me on what he should or should not carry, on what he should or should not leave in his car, about how he should leave it and even a little moral turpitude lesson about the evils of the world. No one asked for your approval or assistance, we are doing quite well on our own thanks move on while you are way behind.

So you don't know, you're just assuming. If you're wrong, no box is going to keep his stuff safe.

You mean he didn't SEE anyone around, when he left his car. I rather doubt many "random punks" would jump out and wave as he walked away.

And you're going to tell us that your buddy parked an expensive Range Rover with $20,000 worth of stuff in it in a lot with no security whatsoever? Does that seem real bright to you?

If he's not willing to take a few easy steps to protect his livelihood, making it complicated isn't going to help much. Sounds like you want it to FEEL safe, rather than to BE safe.

All I hear is that he left his gear in the car. That should not be the problem.
There are cheap steel burglar alarm enclosures, Modify your car and bolt them down, no pry bar will get them open or remove them from your vehicle.
http://www.webclassifieds.us/734763/Wall-Mount-Alarm-Locking-Box,-Security-Box.html
Bolt one or two in the trunk, problem solved.
Im sure there are other alternatives but this is my solution.
Just pile beach towels and an ice chest on top and it's very discrete. (Pampers may be better).
My two coppers.

I feel a need to ask. You said he lost at least one iPad. While he was doing the police report thing, did he have the presence of mind to attempt logging into icloud.com and hitting the "Find my iPhone" button?

Assuming the iPad had a good battery, broadband access, and an iCloud account set up, this applet will drop a pin on a map within 100 feet of where the device is.

If anybody readingthis has an iWhatever and doesn't know what I'm talking about, go to settings and iCloud. Make sure it is on. Scroll down and ensure the "Find My iPhone" switch is on. Now go to your PC and log into icloud.com. If you have 2 or more devices, go to the App Store and download the "Find My iPhone" app to find one device from the other.

Wow seriously your getting so far off topic its really amazing. He parked it like many people do. He carries expensive things for his job like many people do. It got broken into and stuff was taken like happens all the time. Several other cars were also broken into according to the Police so its amazing that they were all followed to the same place. Apparently Lex Luther was waiting for my friend and several others who don't even know each other along with his henchmen in an old ice creme truck, damn man. I am forced to park wherever all the time and with way more than that sometimes in my car. A box that would require a plasma cutter to get into would probably raise some suspicion from people as they worked on it with the car alarm blaring don't you think? Now do us all a favor and please stop your not convincing me of anything and your point is moot. This thread is about some sort of secure box for camera equipment not whatever you want it to be about. Start your own if you wish but leave mine to what it was intended for.

I asked him the same thing and so far non of them are turned on. He also reported all the camera stuff to Canon and it all goes into a National Database that the Pawn Shops all check so hopefully it will turn up somewhere. Now he has been told that several other cars got broken into nearby so it wasn't only him.
