Anthidium manicatum, commonly called the European wool carder bee, is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae, the leaf-cutter bees or mason bees. They get the name 'carder' from their behavior of scraping hair from leaves such as lamb's ears.
They aggressively chase other bees from the flowers they are visiting. They are not shy like the other two animals and at least gave me a chance to keep shooting until a few were in focus.

Thanks Greg! Never a dull moment around here. Maybe the carder bee was after the buck's velvet.
Thats a great set Victor. Never heard of or saw this bee before. Thanks for the information. Outstanding detail in every shot. -Doc
Thank you Doc. I had heard of it a couple of years ago when I mis-identified one of the hover flies as a Carder bee. I never expected to really see one here. When I saw it enlarged, it was obvious that it was a bee, and I was able to chase down the ID. Because it was so strange, I took maybe 150 shots to make sure I got some good ones. They moved around too fast for manual focus flying, and there was a little wing moving the flowers off & on. That lens has the old screw drive auto focus. Digital is our friend!!
