Anyone been?
Thinking of adding it to our itinerary when we go in September.
Not really a photo trip, just as an interesting side trip.
The visitor center is closed for renovation, no on-line reservations but tickets are free and first come first served.
Not sure if we will be able to get in..
Thanks for any input.

It's pretty cool, especially the burial vaults. But cameras are not allowed inside. We were there in March 2017 and had no problem getting in.

I have been there 5 times (taking groups). IMO it is one of the must-see places in Ireland.

Worthwhile, for sure. I did not know about the camera restriction so have an interesting shot in the entry tunnel...which is supposed to line up with the winter solstice sun rays.

Newgrange is definitely worth a visit. It is is the largest and most famous of the neolithic (Stone Age) passage graves in Ireland. It dates back to 3,000 years BC which predates the Pyramids of Giza by 500 years.
I used to live about 30 minutes from it and we often took Sunday afternoon drives to visit. Back then, there was just a simple iron gate at the entrance to the passage and a guide who would basically give a tour anytime someone showed up. Nowadays, it is a major operation. The roads round about the area are closed off and the Visitors Center is a couple of miles away. You can only visit the site by guided shuttle bus from the Visitors Center.
News that the Visitors Center is being renovated concerns me. The last time I was there - a couple of years ago - there was talk of installing a copy of the passage grave at the Visitors Center and closing the original to the public. If that is what the renovation is about, this may be the last chance to experience the original. It doesn't surprise me however. The monument is bound to be suffering from the volume of tourists in the last couple of decades. Traversing the passage involves rubbing your belly on the prehistoric carvings on the stones that line the sides. Humidity from visitors in the chamber is causing the limestone capstones to soften.
Try to get there early. I've never had to wait more than an hour to get the tour was just enough time to visit the exhibits in the Visitors Center, but if you leave it to late you may miss the last tour.
Add a visit to Trim Castle which is 30 minutes away to complete a nice day trip from Dublin.

Also, if you like Irish High Crosses, the tallest in Ireland is nearby at Monasterboice. There are three of them at that location, the tall one is 18 feet, but the most beautiful is Muirdach's cross.
