For those still watching ... thank you PMorin: I went with a 5lb. bag of plastic pellets from Polly Plastics. Just tried it out today on the driver side sill of my car - perfect.
Glad my suggestion was helpful.
Coming late to the party, but for light weight, compressibility for travel and firm support during use, it is hard to beat the 200-pair jar of earplugs you can get at Lowe's for less than $25.
A novel idea. That's what you use?

I use them in the beanbag rests for my rifles - which I used to use for my cameras.
Now, with VR lenses, I don’t need them as often for the cameras.
You don’t have to unwrap the individual pairs from their plastic pouches, either.
This has the added benefit of always having spare earplugs available whenever you need them - for you or someone else.
The rifle (or the camera) sinks into the bag a little, causing it to cradle the barrel (or lens) and is very steady.
They are also much better at damping vibration than harder media.
