The younger generation looks at me as if they don't get it and in truth they probably don't. I think the majority of the Hedgehoggers are of an age and experience that they will.
During WWII there were many foreign pilots in the RAF from several countries overrun by the German Army. One such pilot was really good as well as handsome and became a darling of the English press and many a young Engliss lass. The RAF decided to take advantage of this fame and during some R&R time asked him to speak at several clubs, pubs and churches on behalf of the bond effort to support the war. Because he had a heavy accent they sent a young Lt. with him to help out.
At one church the pilot was speaking to several old ladies about his exploits. At one point he said, "Und der I vas at 5 tousand feet ven 2 Fokkers came ar me out ofv da sun". The young Lt. interrupted and said, "I should explain that a Fokker is a type of German aircraft." The pilot looked at him & said, "ya, dat iss true, but des Fokkers ver flying Messerschmitts."
I think LBJ was President when I first heard that one. Maybe Eisenhower. Still funny, though.
I sent that one to my son who is in the Air Force. I had never heard it before, thanks for sharing.
I had to copy and send that one to a retired Air Force helicopter pilot from Vietnam that I went to h.s. with.
Your story reminded me of a friend, 'Kick Volgers' who was from Den Haag in Holland. Kick had to leave when the Germans invaded and he made it to England and flew for the RAF.
Really good guy, I miss him!
That is a good "golden oldie." But you messed it up a bit.
The Fokker is a Dutch aircraft
I had heard this story before, but it is a clever play on words and always enjoyable to see again.
JerseyT wrote "The Fokker is a Dutch aircraft."
True in WW II, but in WW I Fokker aircraft were German war machines. And after the Nazis overran Holland in WW II, Fokker aircraft there were absorbed into the Luftwaffe.
I first heard the story from Rudy, a Swiss classmate in the early 60s. He the ideal accent for such a joke.
